I just tossed my lot in there as well. We are 90 strong... whee.

For shame, I never even thought of the UDIC when I joined Facebook. Have
mercy on me. :(

I'm not going to join, but I'll add it to my UDIC greeting letter.
Just think how many posts there could be if all 90 of those folks (minus
the I love dragons and know nothing about Ultima goobers) would learn to
use a newsreader and post here.

The unfortunate thing is that to most of said people that equates to you
or I reverting to a typewriter and mass maililing the contents of the
newsgroup to the UDIC roster. It's "old tech" or something. Pff.
They just don't get the wonderfulness of this place. :(
I am in the process of reverting to a typewriter -- for writing
fiction. I'm just trying to track down the model I learned to type on
in good working condition.
I am there as well - though this is for showing the flag only.
Actually there would be the possibility of updating facebook via
nntp :)
I have some code that at least updates my profile, so updating a group
should not be too different.

That rather sounds like fun. I love typewriters, though I probably
couldn't realistically use one for any practical purpose. I prefer their
aesthetic value more than anything albeit they're fun to punch out the
occasional letter on.

Yeah, really. And I won't be joining Facebook either. I don't want
anything to do with the place.

I not only have a typewriter, I have two. And both work. And I even
have some extra ribbon thingys for both. I even use them occasionally
just for fun.

Never compare yourself to the best others can do,
but rather to the best you can do.
I have fountain pens and practice calligraphy for writing on birthday
cards and the like (I use a fountain pen for my personal journal/diary
as well, but I just write cursive there).
Anyway, I don't see the need to slag facebook. Its much like every
other mode of on-line communication with some particular virtues and
pitfalls.

Oh I wasn't slagging Facebook, I use it too. I'm just saying a lot of
people who refuse to use USENET unfortunately seem to do so because it's
"old".

Don't you know, usenet is for us old farts, all the kids use facebook or
twitter :P
People who have never heard a modem handshake probably will never be seen
here and I'm not sure if I think that is a bad thing. Sure it is quieter,
but I can actually read the posts.
Especially if the play-by-play of their entire lives is not really
interesting ...

Bi-bong Bi-bong bi-bong <white noise>.
I simply have less time and energy to spend on usenet, but then again,
I do not do more than the occasional one-liner at facebook, either.
I was trying to put that into words but for the life of me I couldn't...
thanks! Oh boy I remember when v90 came out.

I learned to type at the age of four. My handwriting is non-existent
(when I have to write I do joined-up block-caps with a green biro). I
can draw calligraphy, but it takes me an absolute age to write
anything that way.
That thought reminds me of when AOL gave their people access to the
NNTP world..
