Fellow Ultima Enthusiats:

In my opinion, one of the hardest apsects of the Ultima games wasn't
where to find that one key, it was what to name you Avatar! So I've
decided to start compiling a list of favorite Avatar names which I will
periodically repost. So if you are having trouble thinking of a good
heroic name, are looking for something new, or just want to get to know
the Avatars of your fellow adventurers, I hope this list will be of
help. I'm starting the list with the names that I use myself and the
names of Ultima charcters I have used in past Ultima games. Feel free
to reply with a name or names and any additional comments you wish to
havealong with the name. Here are a few to start as well as others

Call me booring.

Witless news reader> Hello Booring

Yes well.. anyway. I may be unispired but one of the things I allways loved about the
Avatar was the fact that he came from 20th century earth and the things I loved about
the Ultima's (especially Ultima VII) was the realism inherrent in the society and the
games... So in keeping with this I have allways called my Avatar Nathan.. which is my
name. It helped me immerse myself in the games and like all good escapism I could
imagine I *was* the avatar.

I wouldn't mind knowing how many other players feel this way.

As of now, I'm on U4 and have always used Rand as the name of my Avatar
and plan to keep using it. I take it from Robert Jordan's Wheel of
Time Series.

Oh well Aum, it looks as though its just you and me against the rest of the Ultima
gaming public. :)
Oh come on you closet "I name my avatar after myself" gamers.. express yourself
and after that recent court ruling you wont be censored for it! :)

I often choose favorite Historical Figures, or literary characters for
my Avatars.

Joan D' Arc (F) Well DUH! Think about it
Daniel (M) My name.
Danny (M) My Nickname

Strider (M) From The Lord of the Rings books by J.R.R. Tolkein
Aragorn (M) The actual name of Strider
Boromir (M) Warrior from the Lord of the Rings
Verolina (F) From a cartoon series long ago
Galadriel (F) From TLTR
Rael (M or F) Character in a screenshot I've seen (Unisex)

Of course, if you really wanted to go to town you could use his
full name:
Aragorn, Elessar, Elfstone, Isildur's Heir
What do you mean it won't fit?

(Sorry 'bout that. I have just been re-reading LOTR and for some
reason, every time Aragorn meets someone important, he feels
it is necessary to make some great speech and spend two pages
on his name.)

Okay, back the truck up... I'm just a wee-bit confused. As Iolo would
say, "Avatar, thou art insane in the membrane!" and the Avatar would
reply, "Why are you looking at me ese? Can't you see I'm loco?!"

Now is your favorite avatar name:

1. my name
2. An of Yelm
3. Richard
4. Attilia the dragon
5. Horance (while he was in U6)

I appreciate having someone as er, enthusiastic {yeah, that's a good word

method to your madness. So would you please reply and be more coherant,

Yeah, I find that I also use my Avatar names for most of the RPG games I
play such as the Ultima series, D&D, and some of the RPG's for the SNES
that I played before I sold mine.

I think that the RPG's for the SNES were pretty good but there were some
downsides. They were always very visually stunning (Secret of Mana for
ex) but the problem was that I could beat them in a few days, about 16
hours total playing time.

Somewhere I think I saw that it said that it took 40 hours to beat U6.
And that's just straight playing time. That doesn't include the many
hours you can spend agonzing over how to figure out a puzzle or set off a
flag that leads to the next event. Plus, each Ultima is getting more and
more visual. Especially Serpent's Isle.... ;)

But anyways... I do tend to ramble a bit which is a shame for someone my
age. But sorry for being so time consuming and I thank you for your entry!

I figured I might as well join the thread, so long as I've been up roughly
40 hours and see no sleep ahead. :)

I've never played a female avatar, oddly enough. Well, okay, I did play a
female avatar in U7 just to see if Nastassia would still fall in love with
you. Boy, was I unsurprised with that one :)

Anyway, the names I've been using (in rough chronological order) are:

Odin
Loki
Thor (these go back to my U3 days in the mid-80s, love those short
charnames)
Quarex (well, it's my handle, I used it first)
Questaaro (Savage Empire)
Grath
Verac
Zeed (felt like making names up)
Sir Horace (I don't remember why I liked that mage so much)
Azdak (after the judge in the Caucasian Chalk Circle, I loved playing him
so much I figured I should take him to the game)
Alonquix (I made this name up during my Might&Magic II days, woo!)
Clortho (Vince, Keymaster of Gozer)
Nyxtos
Diezeltron (feelin' Cyberiffic)

That's about it, though I'm sure I had more names than that in my 800
completions of Ultima 6 from beginning to end. :)

Well, that's the list as of 5:09am on 6/21/96. If the

majority of the readers of this newgroup feel that the list
is getting to large to post, please inform me and I will make
the list available by request only. Even if I stop posting
it, please keep sending me and posting the names. I find it
quite fascinating discovering the names of fellow avatars.

Brianna Knight Dragon,

This is probably of no relevance to anyone but myself but here it goes.
That name Brianna has popped up earlier in my life. In third grade there
was a girl named Brianna who everyone thought was so pretty. One day, in
the middle of class, she busted out a huge fart that everyone in the room
heard. It was really funny since she was so embarrased. And since we
were all 8 and 8 year olds enjoy the humor of bodily functions.

Like you really needed to know all this...

As for me, I had never heard the name before Steven mentioned it to me.

Thanks for sharing that funny memory. Hopefully THAT Brianna isn't on the
net and hears you sharing her "Life's Most Embarrassing Moment."

My favorite Avatar name is: Brianna Knight. It's a combo name from a couple
of sources. First, my husband had a daughter by his first wife and he wanted
her middle name to be Brianna. That didn't happen but he's always loved that
name. "Knight" comes from my husband's alter ego on the romance newsgroups:
Feral Knight. I combined them to create what I now use in all roll playing
games.

The best name by far is Questor. From Ultima 1 to 8 , it works for
everything! (or so I think.) You on the other hand, may have a
different opinion.

*Who* is Clive Sinclair? Where have you been? (or is he not so well known
outside UK?).

He invented the very successfull ZX Spectrum Z80-based computer (I've still
got mine) and various useless things like the Sinclair C5 (a sort of three
wheeled electric car thing).

I'm not sure what he's up to now...

The Spectrum was never much of an export..

Hmm. Last I saw he'd come up with some sort of supereffecient
electric motor that you slap on the back wheel of your
bicycly if yez a lazy bugger. Actually useful too,
apparently. That's a first. :>

Well, the Spectrum and the ZX81 did make it to the U.S. as the
Timex/Sinclair line of computers.. they never did too well,
I'm afraid. Remarkable computers though..

Yep, Clive was up to inventing the Zeta or Zike or whatever that
you just described.. I really lost track of him after the fall
of Sinclair Research, though..

I assume Origin read these pages, so I wouldn`t be too surprised if
one of the more irksome characters in U9 happened to be named Ranzer.
Remember Saduj in U5? He could be a long lost relative.

Here are some I have used:

Galain m
Erland m (Current Favorite...Ultima Online)
Lancelot m (for Ultima 8 of course)
Vala f
Conan m (used this one a LONG time ago!)
Lazarus m
Fingers m
Pris f
Beowulf m (Serpent Isle)
Uther (Ultima 7)

IMHO, Raymond Feist's Krondor books provide some of the best names that
just roll off your tongue...except for Pug of course. :)

I've always used Elisa (but only with the female avatar games) I

<long lists deleted>

I've only used two names since I started playing Ultima. My own name,
John, and another name, Docmani.

When I bought Ultima V, I was big into hanging out on BBSs (mmmm high school....)
When my friends bought U5, they typed in their BBS aliases for their names.
When I finally go it for the C64, it only gave you 8 characters for your name.
My BBS alias, Doctor Maniac, would not fit. So, I shortened it. My friends
were there at the time, and the shortened version of my alias caught on,
and I've been using it ever since (hence my email address....)

Its sort of an odd name, I'll agree, but I've never had the heart to
stop using it.....
