To be a bit more verbose: you cannot get a companion to join you if
you're the same class. This means that eventually you should end up with
a party of eight (including yourself), each character representing one
class and one virtue.
Speaking of finding companions and things, how does one get to Magincia,
Moonglow, Jhelom, etc.? I've killed pirates but am unsure how to use the
emptied ship. Is there somewhere where one can purchase a ship, or is
there a flying carpet hiding somewhere that's accessible without a ship,
or something?

You step on the ship and press "B" for "Board." There is another mode
of movement, you'll find it later.

You don't. You can't have 2 rangers in the party

Katrina is in New Magincia. Go South IMMEDIATELY upon entering the town
and you should find her. I don't remember where Geoffrey is (it's been a
year or two).

A) Shamino will not join you because you are a ranger. Likewise, Mariah
would not join you if you were a mage, etc.
B) i) Katrina is in New Magincia in the swamp just north (?) of where
you enter the city. She's pretty much the only human in town.
ii) Geoffery is in Jhelom in the inn, I think. I also think you have
to jimmy open the door to get to him.

A) You can't. Or alternatively, don't be a ranger.
B) Katrina is in Magincia, directly south of where you enter i.e. not over
the bridge. Geoffrey is in Jhelom, can't remember exactly where.

Errr, what about stepping on an empty ship and (B)oarding it? have you
tryed that???
hmmm, i don't remember the exact coordinates, but Magincia is about east
of paws, i think, after the buccaneers den. you can also get there by a
moon gate, or a gate spell with phase 8.
Moonglow is on the south edge of a large island east of Vesper, or gate
with phase 1.
Jhelom's island is roughly south of skara brae, or phase 6.
i don't have the map here so it's not too accurate, but these are the
general directions.
about flying, there's no flying carpet, but you can find a balloon. find
the entrance to the dungeon in LB's castle, and from there you'l get to
where the balloon is.

As far as I know (and i finished U4 a few times) you can only have
one member of each class in your party, so if your'e a Ranger you can't
get Shamino to join you.
Katrina is waiting for you in the ruins of Magincia. In case you searched
there and didn't find her, she's in the south west corner of the town, and
you have to go outside of the river surounding the town. Geoffrey can be
found in Jhelom, I think at the inn but i'm not sure of that.

Geoffry is in Jhelom in the inn. Take a Key as you will need to jimmy
his door to get to him.

As far as I can remember all you have to do is "board" the ship, which
is 'B', I think. Try walking on to the ship and pressing that.
