I have two questions regarding Ultima VI.

- How much experience do I need to advance a level? I have to be on 5th
level to be able to cast the pickpocket spell on Phoenix, which
apparently is required to continue the plot. (*Now* I can blame myself
for deleting those Ultima IV files.)

- Where can I exchange gold nuggets and gems? There must be tons of them
in some dungeons, and I don't much see the point of its existence if you
can't use it for anything.

Experience table:

L1 = 0 XP L5 = 800 XP
L2 = 100 XP L6 = 1600 XP
L3 = 200 XP L7 = 3200 XP
L4 = 400 XP L8 = 6400 XP

Trade Gold Nuggets at the Royal Mint in Britain. It is in the same building
as the Town Hall, right in front of the Castle, and tothe right of the main
road leading from said Castle. (Incidentally, it is in the SAME PLACE in U7.)

You *could* sell the gems (at a provisioner's), but they are much more useful
to keep. USE them to bring up a map (as in the Peer spell).

100 - 200 - 400 - 800 - 1600 - 3200 - 6400 exp.

Talk to Teri at the mint SE of LB's castle. If you've gotten to the point
where you need Phoenix's belt and you haven't even been to the mint in
Britain yet, it sounds like you're probably playing straight from a
walkthrough. It's your game, of course, but that's likely to destroy any
of a developing storyline.

I think it doubles in increments. 100 for 2nd. 200 for 3rd. 400 for
4th. 800 for 5th.

In Britain. Exit Castle Britannia and go into the building to your
East. In the northern end is a woman who EXCHANGEs gold for coins.

Seriously? I must have about 3000 points by now, and I'm still on third
level. This looks like a really irritating bug to me.

I'm not.

I knew from U7 that there was a mint in that area, but I couldn't find
anyone to exchange gold with there. Will try again.

But you're right, of course. Walkthroughs can really destroy a game,
especially one like this, were half the fun is what you do outside of
the real plot.

Picking her pocket is not *required* to advance in the game. I killed
her to get the belt, which I must admit is an un-Avatarly thing to do,
but I justified my decision in the name of justice. :) I thus got
through that part at 4th level (she is quite easy to defeat).

A-ha, but you have most likely not even been to a shrine yet. The only
way to raise your level is to have enough experience, find out the
mantra to a shrine, free the shrine from the gargoyles, then meditate
at it. Each shrine corresponds to a certain raise in attributes, such
as Spirituality giving you 1 point in each, Humility giving you
nothing, and all the ones inbetween giving you 2-3 points for 2-1
attributes.

I always went to the shrine of valor for everyone, myself, because the
ability to carry more things always outweighs the ability to cast more
or hit more often. =-]

Nononono, half the fun of U6 is that once you won, and if you know
*EXACTLY* what you need to do, you can beat the entire game within 24
game (Not RL) hours.

Its hard tho :)

The level of your characters are not advanced automatically. You have got
to meditate at a shrine to gain levels. Different shrines will raise
your stats by differenct values.

Hope this solves your problem.

Me too, if you free the shrines first, you can find a glass sword in the crypts
under the Lycaeum. Just walk up next to her (don't even go into combat mode),
ready the glass sword and POW! no more Phoenix. You then get a half-dozen or
so glass swords off her body.....

From a distance maybe...When I checked her out the first time, I thought
she was just wielding a set of magic swords, and when and attacked her.

*WHACK* Dead Iolo
*WHACK* Dead Shamino

Oh wait..those are GLASS swords.

<LOL!>
I did it with a magic bow, and figured she'd be pretty tough. After one
shot, she yelled for help and started to run away. The second brought
her down. I see that your situation was a bit different, though. <EG>

If I remember right it was three points distributed accross the three stats
according to which virtue is based on which principle:

spirituality is the combination, therefore it gets one on each.
sacrifice combines courage and love: STR and DEX go up.
honesty is pure truth: INT goes up.
humility is not based on any principle: nothing changes.
etc.

It was quite unfair. I was of course, aware of the glass sword from U5,
but had never SEEN one (you don't really ever see any weapon in U5).

I had had a guy create a magic shield, and had found a magic breastplate,
so the "item with a glowing blue outline" looked just right. Oh boy what
a mistake (I hadn't saved in a while either).
