Actually, if I remember correctly, its
'yo-low'

(This was Richard Gariott's pronunciation from a tape included
with the special edition of Ultima VI, but its been a long time
since I've listened to that tape.....)

Whoa! A tape by Lord British himself? How? Where? When? Who? Why? . . .
(panting noises)
(calming down noises)
Okay, actually, what I'd like to know is:
1. Where can I get it, and
2. What does it have on it?
I must warn you that I probably won't sleep until I find out . . .

BTW, how the heck do you pronounce "Shamino"? I've always pronounced it
"SHAM-in-oh" (accent 1st), but I've heard it pronounced "Sham-MEAN-o"
(accent 2nd).

This is why we need an Ultima where all of the characters speak in .wav
files.

But since I always said it "Eye-Oh-Low" before that is kind of how I still
pronounce it =]

Yah, O.K., he’s probably right [duh], but I’ve always liked "I-LOW".

Plain, simple, and to the point. Iolo never seemed worthy of any
complicated names anyhow. In fact, having a 4 letter name really fit
during his ridiculous tantrums in U7. BTW, how was his last name
pronounced?

I think it should be pronounced with the Italian Stress , Like
Iolov but without the English stress ('I' is pronounced like 'E' in
italian) so you should read it Eolov , I think..

While I'm at it, Dupre is pronounced "Du-prae", (long "a" on the end).

Sentri is pronounced "Sahn-trae",

and Shamino has an "n" sound in the middle, not a long "e".

We're trying to spell most of the names in U9 phoneticly so people will know
how to pronounce them. When Richard told me that he didn't want names that were
difficult to pronounce in U9, I said, "Oh, you mean like Iolo?".

When I played U4 and U5, I pronounced it Doo-Pruh. It was only when it was
explained in U6 that I started pronouncing it correctly. It would have
been a whole lot clearer if the game had shown the accent above the e.

It is pronounced Yo-Lo since the name Iolo is a pet name for Iorath, which
is also the name Yorath. Its kinda like Michael being called Mikey, and
Jonathan being called Johnny.

(Besides you can always just join the Society for Creative Anachronism and
ask him yourself like I did at his Crossbow shop, New Worlds Arbalest. I
even got his autograph and a photo taken with him at an archery range. I
think this year I may buy a crossbow from him finally. Now I still haven'

You are correct Minerva. I've heard it pronounced from some employees
at Origin. You say ee-oh-lo so fast on the first two syllables that it
should sound like yo-lo.
doo-pray is the typical pronunciation. I've never heard anyone complain
of the more Americanized doo-pree.
Okay, so is it joff-ree or jee-off-rey or jeff-ree?
sha-meen-o or sham-en-o. I've heard the latter more often. Like
Shimano fishing reels.
jay-na or jan-na

Iolo Fitzowen's first name is pronounced "Yo-lo". Two proofs:

1) In Ultima VI, the character *says* his name is pronounced this way!
2) The real life "Iolo" pronounces his faux name "Yo-lo".

Geez, guys, get over it already.

Its the latter and it was taken from a gear on RG's bike, which he
misspelled.

Actually, I just call them Sham, Doops and Lolo they know who I'm on

interview a couple of times and in all cases he referred to Iolo as
Yo-low. I presume it is a twist on German or something. eg. Janning is
pronounced Yanning. Or perhaps it was supposed to be like German and
the name was originally Jolo pronounced Yo-low but somebody thought that
Richard's handwriting spelled it as Iolo? :)

1. It's Welsh. Ask any of the welsh dragons,
2. It's yo-lo, and that's all there is to it.
