'yo-low'
(This was Richard Gariott's pronunciation from a tape included
with the special edition of Ultima VI, but its been a long time
since I've listened to that tape.....)

(calming down noises)
Okay, actually, what I'd like to know is:
1. Where can I get it, and
2. What does it have on it?
I must warn you that I probably won't sleep until I find out . . .
BTW, how the heck do you pronounce "Shamino"? I've always pronounced it
"SHAM-in-oh" (accent 1st), but I've heard it pronounced "Sham-MEAN-o"
(accent 2nd).
This is why we need an Ultima where all of the characters speak in .wav
files.

I listen to this tape periodically. Psychotic Dragon is right. Lord British
says "Yo-Low".
But since I always said it "Eye-Oh-Low" before that is kind of how I still
pronounce it =]

Yah, O.K., he’s probably right [duh], but I’ve always liked "I-LOW".
Plain, simple, and to the point. Iolo never seemed worthy of any
complicated names anyhow. In fact, having a 4 letter name really fit
during his ridiculous tantrums in U7. BTW, how was his last name
pronounced?

And now for somethingcompletley different.....
Your friend would have laughed himself to death if he knew I used to
say Lo-Lo. <quick laugh>. You see i allways though that the I was in
fact an L and when I was speaking to a friend and said
'.....Lo-Lo....' he indead did call me something horrid.

Actually, in Ultima 6, type in name when talking to Iolo.. It says "... (He
pronounces his name yo-lo.)"

I think it should be pronounced with the Italian Stress , Like
Iolov but without the English stress ('I' is pronounced like 'E' in
italian) so you should read it Eolov , I think..

That's the way. Ee-oh-lo, but the first two syllables run into each
other as in yo-lo. Your clumsy american tongues <g> may pronounce it
yo-lo. It's a Welsh name, so if you ever meet a Welsh person ask them.

Though for some reason it's much easier for me to remember "doo-pray"
than it is to remember "ee-o-lo".

While I'm at it, Dupre is pronounced "Du-prae", (long "a" on the end).
Sentri is pronounced "Sahn-trae",
and Shamino has an "n" sound in the middle, not a long "e".
We're trying to spell most of the names in U9 phoneticly so people will know
how to pronounce them. When Richard told me that he didn't want names that were
difficult to pronounce in U9, I said, "Oh, you mean like Iolo?".
-Brian
Iolo's last name is FitzOwen, which is pretty easy to pronounce.
-Brian
"Iolo" is pronounced "Yo-low". Its a Welsh name, and the SCA name of David
Watson, the "real" Iolo, and a good friend of Richard's. So there. :)

Well, before I became enlightened to such matters...
Dupre was Do-PRUH
Iolo was Eye-OH-lo
Shamino was Shah-MEAN-oh
etc etc
:)

When I played U4 and U5, I pronounced it Doo-Pruh. It was only when it was
explained in U6 that I started pronouncing it correctly. It would have
been a whole lot clearer if the game had shown the accent above the e.

I believe Americans would say Dew-pray, the British would say
D'you-pray. (As in Jaqueline DuPre the famous British cellist).
--Chris
You are correct Minerva. I've heard it pronounced from some employees
at Origin. You say ee-oh-lo so fast on the first two syllables that it
should sound like yo-lo.
doo-pray is the typical pronunciation. I've never heard anyone complain
of the more Americanized doo-pree.
Okay, so is it joff-ree or jee-off-rey or jeff-ree?
sha-meen-o or sham-en-o. I've heard the latter more often. Like
Shimano fishing reels.
jay-na or jan-na
muh-rye-uh (definitely) or muh-ree-uh
Julia. Katrina. Sentri. Toshi. Please.
