So we need a reliable storage and only 16 serial numbers stored there,
and game could be played long after any source of new serial numbers
would cease to exist.
Please DO NOT REPLY to this message if you don't want to donate your
serial number. The intent of this topic is to collect 16 serial
numbers, each in its separate message, so players can pick appropriate
serial number, according to their player number from their current
game.
Here's mine: E4TP99BW
How to use the donated serial number? In STARS.INI file in the root
folder of your windows installation (usually C:\WINDOWS) find the
section
[Windows]
and within it the line
GlobalSettings=(some 30 characters and numbers).
Those characters held (beside computer ID) also coded Stars! serial
number. Now just delete them, so nothing is left to the right of the
equal sign, and save the file. When you run Stars! again, it will ask
you for the serial number. Enter the donated, and you're good to go
with the current PBEM game, and all your testbeds / hotseat/ single
player games as well.
How to play multiple PBEM games?
I do not recommend that. However if you just have to, you need to have
multiple STARS.INI files, each with its different serial number. How to
do that? Here's the solution:
1) create a STARS.INI for particular game as described above;
2) copy that new STARS.INI to the folder where your game is;
3) create the following batch file in the folder with your game:
copy STARS.INI c:\windows
c:\stars!\stars2j.exe c:\stars!\game\game.m1
-p(game_pwd_without_brackets)
OFC replace names accordingly to your settings.
There could also be a problem with mixing "regular" and "donated"
serial numbers in the same game, as some could be the same. That can be
avoided by publically announcing what donated serial numbers will be
used, so game host can swap players accordingly.
I hope this topic will help getting new players into the game. It would
be a shame letting such a wonderfull game as Stars! is die because of
such a banal reason as is a lack of new serial numbers.

I bought 2 games with serials just before Xplosic stopped distributing.
My girlfriend and i play together. My brother also uses the second
serial so that he and i can play. When i saw this post, i decided to
try to get all 3 of us in the same game.
Using Iztok's suggestion my girlfriend changed her stars.ini file, and
then entered one of the serials from the previous post. But it now
asks her every time she starts Stars to enter a serial. Have i done
something wrong? Is there a way to let it remember that she has
entered a new serial?
Nevermind..hehe After starting the game we realised that serial #11
fromthe post is not valid with the J patch which we are running. When
we used PricklyPea's it worked fine!

P.S. - also noticed SSNG was scrapped, thats a shame.
Hi theBLANG,
if you are looking for the community(tm), have a look at
www.starsautohost.org. It is more active than this newsgroup.

Andreas
Actually, you may find that many serials in that list won't work with
the J patch.
