newbie multi player help needed

Hi my quake works fine at home in single player.
BUT, when I try to join a server I warp into the game but then my screen
doesn't update..I appear to stay in the same spot but can here my footsteps
etc. I occasionaly get kicked out with the server saying "unexpected
response, can't cmd" or similar. I also have the picture of the connection
icon in the top left corner of my screen.
Please someone give me some starting points to track down this problem.

You joined a server where your ping is way too high. Get Gamespsy
http://www.gamespy.com. It will show you a list of servers and their ping
times, as well as lots of other game information. And it's much easier to
use than the in-game menus. The game is playable with pings up to about
300, but the lower the better.
