Just use the Q+E strafe, A+D turn, W+S forward-back and use the mouse for
aming, button1 fire, button2 jump. Or you can search www.slipgatecentral for
some aliases that will help you out!

Try:
up/down cursor keys for forward/back
left/right cursor keys for SIDESTEP left/right
CTRL for jump
keypad 0 for force_centerview
mouse to look around (put +mlook into your autoexec.cfg)
mouse button 1 to fire
mouse button 2 to select next weapon

I am a Quake gamer. I have always considered myself to be okay, but
then I
viewed a demo from PC Gamer Mag (Oct. 97) in which a player finished the

entire game in 19 minutes and 49 seconds! He used tactics I had never
even
considered in the past, and his use of control was uncanny!

It led me to question the configuration of my own control system:
keyboard
only. Arrows for turning and walking, A to jump, ALT to sidestep, CTRL
to
fire, PGUP/PGDN to move my view. Is there a better way?

I realize I might have to spend money on a decent joystick, but right
now
all I have is a 2-button mouse. Please help me!!!

and use +mlook at console. Then use mouse to turn round, look around
fire etc. It works MUCH better than the keyboard once you're used to
it.

TF Players might like to try:

Q - Grenade 1
E - Grenade 2
X - Special

R - Call for medic
U, I, O - Detpacks

K - discard

Well, they work for me :)

You will always be an "okay" Quake player unless you convert yourself
by praying at the shrine dedicated to the Mouse and KeyBoard combo
(Space-Orb and TrackBall players may take offense at this, BUT this is
just a general statement). I used to be adamant about maintaining a
purely keyboard style, but that was before I discovered Deathmatching.
Let me just say that you WILL be totally and utterly anally-intruded
by even the most marginal of mouse+keyboard players. There is no way
you can aim, both, accurately and rapidly enough in such a fast and
furious environment. In SPQ (Single Player Quake) levels, you have
the luxury of a painfully stupid AI who is both slow and stationary -
which explains why keyboard purists can plod agonizingly through the
levels successfully.

However, if you truly want to immerse yourself in the 3D environment
that iD has created (Thank You!), then I suggest that you port
yourself to the mouse. The learning curve is woefully steep but I can
assure you that the payoff more than makes up for the initial pain.
I suggest completing the Hard and Nightmare levels again as practice
before you try deathmatching. Reaper bots are also a darn good
substitute for the real thing.

These are my configurations:
Keypad 8 - Forward
Keypad 5 - Back
Keypad 7 - Strafe Left
Keypad 9 - Strafe Right
Mouse 1 - Fire
Mouse 2 - Weapon Change
Mouse 3 - Jump

Turning and looking actions are executed through the mouse.

I have always wandered why the excellent players out there always use
the main keys on the keyboard (eg, S, D, X , Z etc) instead of the
keypad keys. Anybody with answers?

reading this thread i'm supprised to see how many people use the
W-S, A-D or the like... I'm acutally a very good player and often keep up
with the LPB's... here's my 2cent config

< = strafe left
> = strafe right
/ = jump
mouse 1 = fire
mouse 2 = move forward
space = move back

+mlook

i also have my X, C, V are set to toggle switch my glquake options...
Ex:
alias plf4 "gl_flashblend 1;a5;echo FLASH BALL ON...;wait;bind C plf3"
alias plf3 "gl_flashblend 0;a5;echo FLASH BALL OFF...;wait;bind C plf4"
bind "C" "plf4"
alias a5 "play airbut1.way"

i have an intellimouse so these won't help you but...

mouse 3 = change weapon
mouse wheel up = select my best longrange weapon
mouse wheel down = select my best shortrange weapon

Really, any four keys in the same w-s a-d type position are as good as
any others, including the cursors. The real thing here is that it the
two sideways keys a-d, 4-6 or whatever should be Sidestep not turn,
allowing you to get out of the way fast. The reason I use WSAD is
because I play TF and it make more sense having the rest of the keyboard
to the left of movement for various TF commands (easily accesible with
right hand).

sorry but i can't help but say this... the thing you do most in quake is
"move forward"
it seems like an obvious choice to bind to a mouse button righ?

First things first. If you want to be competitive, play with +mlook.
Dot. Period. If you don't, then you simply aren't going to be in the
game with the experienced players. Swallow your pride for the 3-4
days it's going to take you to get the hang of it and just do it.

Second ... I think you need to consider a mouse+keyboard control
system. I don't want to reopen the stale debate regarding controls,
but I will simply say I think there are lots of advantages to the
mouse+keyboard approach. No way would I play with only keyboard ...
my sense is that people who do so are in the vast minority and are
primarily rocket fodder for those who don't.

Below are the two files that are read when autoexec.cfg executes. The
basic movements are pretty standard; mine are a personal holdover from
the Doom2 and Ifrag days (anybody remember Ifrag?). The goal is to
associate the most common movements (lateral movement) with the
strongest keys (index and middle). The bound weapons are the only
ones I prefer to use; it's nice to be able to switch quickly whenever
there's quad in play. I also like the quick grenade immensely. Same
principle applies here as with the movements - associate the most
common actions with the strongest fingers.

I guess I fail the Quake purity test because I don't rocket jump
naturally. Heh.

Hope this helps somebody.

Whhops whoah! I meant left hand - all extra keys bound around the w-s
a-d keys (gawd, imagine letting the mouse go!)

Dunno about everyone else, but I played descent for ages before Quake. In
one of the readme's for Descent, it had some advanced key configs that the
people that made Descent used. One of them was the one I converted to.

A - forward
Z - backward
Lshift - strafe left
X - strafe right

+mlook

use mouse to look up/down, left/right, shoot and jump.

I now have alt, ctrl, w, s, q and c bound to various weapons. So when
Quake came to my computer, I was so used to using these keys for 3d
movement, I fixed my Quake keys.

btw how do u assign a command to the intelliwheel, and how do u do the

do u just do for say selecting a projectile weapon

for me, my mouse is on the right hand side of the keyboard. i like my
hands spread out kinda naturally, so to use the keys (see my config in a
slightly earlier post) asdweqzx which is on the left, means my hands arn;t
all cramped together, which is more comfortable and more ergononmic (what
a revolting word) :)

there ya go :)

I see other players have some cool ones (favorite weapons, etc..) that they use

Another loser......... most of the better Quake map editors are made by
programmers who needs those registration fee to maintain a living. It
isn't their fault "if you cannot afford to pay them". If you can't,
don't use their software, end of the story.

BSP is one of the best editors around, supporting both Quake and it's
addons as well as HeXen II. The author has plans to include Quake II as
well. I use it, as well as most other map authors that I know. You can
also d/l the shareware version of WorldCraft, which is another very good
editor. BSP however..is free.

Go here to check them both out:

http://bsphq.telefragged.com/

http://www.planetquake.com/worldcraft/

BSP and WorldCraft both have excellent help pages and tutorials.

Hmmm. try using ESDF instead.
more space to the left also. that gives u a faster set of
