I've found that the X-Files CD has some cool tracks.

Frenzy for when I'm on a roll (most of the time),
Other good ones: Down in the Park and the Alice Cooper track seem fitting
to me.

Other cool CD's
Garbage; Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 Theme); Live's Throwing Copper; and
anything by Steppenwolf (Oldie, but goodie - Magic Carpet Ride and Born to
be Wild are both good Quake tracks)

"Come with me, little girl, on a magic carpet ride -- loser rides my
broomstick -- and so on"

I have aquired quite a taste for Skinny-Puppy (Too Dark Park is pretty good).
There is a Sick sort of way it makes you feel, kinda like all the death around
you in a good 16 man gib-fest. The 2 definitely go hand in hand.

I never listen to the music in a deathmatch, because I am trying to train
myself to use the sounds I hear to my advantage. They can be useful, even
in an arena style fight. For one player Quake, however, the soundtrack
is very nice. There's no incredibly memorable music, like something out
of Actraiser or an rpg, but it's themed pretty well. It reminded me of
Metroid, which doesn't have very interesting music, but is themed perfectly.

I've found the Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries CD plays real well under quake.
Also anything long and techno-ish, like Orbital, Skinny Puppy (BRAP 3!!),
Eat Static, and especially Underworld.

My favorite CD is nine inch nails: closer to god. It takes a little
remapping so Quake uses all of the tracks all of the time (only 9 on the
CD), but it's great. Most of the tracks are fast and loud; perfect for
Quake.

Try any cool metal bands. I find that if you listen to faster, more
heavier music, it fits nicley into the game. Most metal bands always
sing about death and other 'dark' stuff.
I know that these aren't that heavy but I think that theses are pretty
cool.

- Ministry
- Black Sabbath
- Fear Factory
- White Zombie
- Helmet
- Metallica (Master of Puppets album)

Three words: Fixed by NIN. The remix album works beautifully with
Quake. If you have it, try it; you'll love it.

Great choices!!!

I also like listening to the White Zombie remix CD:
"Supersexy Swinging Sounds". I especially like
to "loop" track number 1: Electric Head Pt. 2.
It really rocks with Quake!!!

Others I like:

Gravity Kills, NIN, Stabbing Westward (Ungod), Needle,
and Chemlab. My roomate and I permanently have these
CDs right next to the computer for the all-night quake
sessions. :-)

Blech. I hate when I leave my MW2 CD in and start Quake. The demo plays
with these little Christmas bells going. "Cha ching ching ching cha
ching ching ching..." =)

Oh, Nitzer Ebb, "That Total Age" by the way. Awesome for when my newbie
friends come over because:

1. The music's great older industrial, with nawt but screaming vocals and
drums =).

2. The track that plays on the difficulty select level starts with the
singer yelling "TO THE LEFT!" so my sucky friends know where to go =).

Slightly off-topic, but if you play Screamer, put in Kerplunk and go to
the really long track (Sunbeach Hill, or something similar) you get

I personally find that listening to ABBA gets me in the mood to cover

There's nothing quite like gibbing someone with the GL to "Take A Chance on

You're crazy. I'd listen to "The Carpenters - _Only Just Begun_", but it's
inappropriate for Quake. Much as the jive you are listening to.

Indeed. MW2 Merc soundtrack is absolutely intoxicating. Also try "Vangelis -
_The Mask_".

Come to think of it, _The Carpenters_ might be funny.

Popular, but still it's garbage. If you're looking for the sort of hollow,

I find house music good for a really up-tempo game. It's also really
amusing to spawn in a new level, the music changes, and somebody is
chanting "L.....O.....V.....E" (the letters) mixed in with a bunch of
shotguns, mournful howls, re-spawn telefrag gibs, explosions, etc.

Anyways, Sepultura is 'keeler' to listen to while playing Quake.

How about "Barry Manilow's greatest hits", or anything from the

Seriously, my FAVORITE song to "kill" to is "After The Flesh" by My Life

Couple of other good ones for DM on that CD, but "After the Flesh" is

A third for that... "Hard Wired", "Tactical Neural Implant", and - best

As far as Skinny Puppy goes: the two best SPs to listen to are, in my

Gee, is it just me or is everyone basically listing their favorite
CD's, and those not necessarilly good for Quake? C'mon - Oasis??
REM?? These are pretty wimpy CD's to be used for Quake. If you are
going to have something with lyrics, get Pantera, Fear Factory, etc -
any hard fast metal or industrial. IMO, dark ambient stuff is much
better...like the Quake CD, Aphex Twin, Plastikman (not really dark
but still cool), and other stuff.

Personally I love classical and Gothic (though only some classical works with
Quake). My favorite CDs for Quake have to be "The Last of the Mohicans",
"Aliens 3", Lycia, (some of) the Grateful Dead. These are particularly good
when the board is not chopped full of people. Most of this music is Gothic
and when you go around the corner and suddenly the CD starts playing
something really eerie you freak out, it feels like someone is watching with
their finger on a trigger.

Ummm, strangley I've found Mariah Carey's "Music Box" can give a surreal
feel to quake. "When a hero comes along...." BLAM! ARRGH!

I used to play Pop Will Eat Itself back in my Descent days, but it got me
hyped up too much and I'd charge into battle without enough thought, and
get blasted to bits real quick.

The best and most atmospheric music for playing Quake to are good
soundtrack albums such as Star Wars and Mission: Imposible.
When the main themes kick in, it really gets you in that gibbing frenzy.
Agreement on REM and Oasis.

What about Sisters Of Mercy (Best Of Vol I) or Metallica (Metallica,
Load) ?

I like to listen to 'Life is Peachy' by Korn. Agressive and extremely violent.
'Wont you get the fuck out of my face...'.
Front Line Assembly are another favourite.

The Watchman.

Yeah, there are, but they're so imbedded in the music that they sound
like part of the music...it's not like listening to pink floyd, or
even NIN for that matter.

Young punks? Try 43 yesterday butt breath. As far as my music tastes
go, since I program a radio station, I don't think I'll rely on your
musical expertise. Besides, if you were intelectual enough to find
trying different things stimulating, you'd be hard pressed to knock
Front Line Assembly w/Quake. Oh well....enjoy your game, and
especially enjoy that neil young crap you probably listen to in your
car.

Master of Puppets forever, man. If you are gonna listen to Metallica
playing Quake, you gotta listen to the *right* Metallica. :)
Seriously though, I've tried it, and it works like a charm.

Try Haujobb's masterpiece 'Freeze Frame Reality' or SpaceTime
Continuum's Emit Ecaps. They are both tough to find but both make for
good frag collecting soundtracks.

The best thing to listen to is Godflesh.
Either their PURE CD or their STREETCLEANER CD.
Techno, Horror, Laborious listening. Quake
was made for it.

I like really sparse, scary stuff, as opposed to on-the-edge pulse
pounding metal... Some of my favorites:

Current 93: "Dawn", "Nature Unveiled"
Psychic TV: "Descending", "Full Pack", etc.

By accident I came across some music that may not qualify as giving the
best atmosphere (in fact it is quite slow guitar music), but does
outperform all other music by appropiateness of title and lyrics:

"If I Had a Rocket Launcher" by Bruce Cockburn

with fantastic lyrics like:
"If I had a rocketlauncher, I'd make somebody pay"

Sure had to laugh when I heard it first.

Frag on,

napalm death's diatribes
fear factory's demanufature (actually any fear factory will work well)
disincarnate's dreams of the carrion kind (soul erosion is an amazing quake
song)
maybe some minor threat, or some thirsty (only have a 7" for that tho)

sepultura's roots is another good one...

True.

Or, if you're seriously warped, try the one cut "Dance 10 Looks 3"
from A Chorus Line (use the command to cause this to repeat). Not
standard CD fare, and it'll really hurt your scores while you roll
over laughing.

My personal favorite CD for Quake is the soundtrack for the movie "The
Crow." Just pop this baby in and let her fly. You don't even need to
mess with the console to configure it properly. I almost forget that
this didn't come with the game. It provides some Nine inch Nails and
Rage against the Machine too name a few. I especially enjoy track
three, an easy going song by Stone Temple Pilots as you float above the
world at the end of each level. Give it a try and see what I mean.

I like THUNDER and RAZORS EDGE AC/DC for Quakin it out!

I'm a 42 yr old Grandpa and my kids don't like my choices for HARD
music, but we all share interest in Roxette. That's what I call
driving music, not Quakin music!

I get the feeling he's trying to say that, if you DON'T program for a
radio station, then his music "expertise" is better.

As for music to go with Quake, Ministry is good. "Burning Inside", or "Just
One Fix". Lotsa good things! :)
