Help: Quake Spy and Spectator mode

With much fiddling, I was finally able to get QSPY32.EXE to connect me to
a local Quake server, but was unable to join the game because I was locked
into SPECTATOR mode. Although this was kinda cool, I REALLY wanted to get
in there and KILL!!!

How can I join a game as a real player, OR how can I switch between
spectator and player modes?

Hmmmm. I tried clicking (I use the mouse), but it would only change my
position to somewhere else in the level. Is it possible that I had been
locked out of game play somehow and clicking would just kill me instantly?

Hit the fire button to play. When you die, you're back in Observer mode.

You have to press the Control key on your keyboard to enter the action.
Once
you're killed, it drives you back to the spectator mode.

Today in a deathmatch I respawned with zero weapons and 999 health. I
could fly, clip through walls and was invisible. It was cool to fly
around and watch from every angle, almost like a movie. What the hell
happened? Is this a patch? Has it happenned to you? It was almost
weird enough.
I use qspy, was this spectator mode?
