From what I've read about Quake, the shareware CD contains the full
registered version, unlockable by calling id and using your creditcard
to get the code...Anyway I went down to the new Computer City store
about a week or two ago to pick and picked up the shareware CD...I
just got around to checking it out today, and was just wondering how
the registration thing is accomplished. The only files on the CD are
install files, and neither the readme files or the manual have any
info about this...are there any shareware copies out there without the
full encrypted version? I hope I didn't waste $10 on stuff I'll just
have to buy again..

You have to install the windows version. Registration (and purchasing other
ID stuff) is accessible only from the Win95 install. The code from ID will
then copy new install files to your hard disk, after which you can install
the registered version for either Win95 or DOS.

When you first attempt to install the shareware cd version of 1.01 you get
a screen advising that you are about to install the shareware version and if
you wish to unlock the full version to stop and use another program (I forget
which one it says) to start the unlock process at which time you will run
that particular file which will advise you to call Id for the unlock code
which ,I believe is based on a code that is generated at your machine.
Anyway, once you read them the credit card info and all and the code that
was generated on your machine, then they give you a code to punch in and your
machine continues with the unlock/install process.

If I have any of the information wrong, I appologize ahead of time. I have
not actually unlocked mine yet but this is the way I have heard that the
process occurs.

Good luck.

You need to install the IDstuff program located on the CD.

Actaully, you probably did waste your money. Was the source code on
your CD 24-CCITY? If so, a freind of mine got a CD from incredible
Universe with that source code that had ONLY the shareware game in the
root directory. There wre NO OTHER directories of ANY KIND on the CD.
The DIR command in DOS reported the internal label as QUAKE101SW.
When he told me about it, I thought he was nuts, so I borrowed his CD
to check it out.

You do get the NiN soundtrack, tho.....

The cost from iD would still be $45 whether you ordered the CD from
them, or just got the unlock code from them. (It'll only make a
differance if you plan to make use the the crack floating around the
net. You wouldn't do *THAT*, would you? ..... :)

Can someone confirm a source code of a CD that actually has the
registered version on it??
I bought the 24-CCITY one before I read the above, and it only has the
installs for the shareware version.. Today I saw another one that was
labled 12-BSTBY... anyone know if this one is the real thing??

I have the same CD as you. It has the full encrypted versions of all
of Id's games on it. I believe the main directory is approximately 97
meg.
