REQ: Help please - Quake 3 crashes on loading

Hi,

Am trying to install Quake 3.

Have a P4(1.5Gb)/256Mb/Matrox G200 (8Mb)/40Gb HDD running Win 98SE.

Tried to do a minimal install and everything seems fine until you try to
load Quake 3 and I get a white screen and a mouse arrow. Nothing else and
the PC is locked up.

Tried to do a full install. PC Locks up!!
Re-loaded DirectX (8.1) - DXDiag shows "no problem". PC Locks up!!
Used GLSet-up to re-install Matrox drivers. PC Locks up!!
(Have read somewhere that the G200 cannot be use din high res - but cannot
find a command-line switch to run Q3 at lower res).

Have tried all manner of desktop settings - running in 16bit, 24bit, 32bit,
800*600, 1024*768, 1152*864 - every combination and still the PC locks and
crashes with this white screen

Strange thing is - the same PC used to run the Quake 3 demo no problem...!

Anyone offer a clue as to how to sort this out.(Have tried searching "google
groups" and visited many Quake 3 websites, but none have shown a solution to
this problem.

Any help appreciated.

Strange..........I just built a P4 2ghz 256mb Radeon 2700 series 32mb DDR
and I have the exact same problem......I installed a LAN in my home and
installed Q3 on my older p3 450 no problem and when I run it on the P4 it
crashes with a white screen!

Is it something to do with the p4 or dx 8.1 ???

Same machine running Unreal 2 !!!!

Sometimes mine will crash on the white screen afterthe grey screen, just
before the opening movie, but usually its ok.

similar problem when i first got q3a

tried updating ALL drivers (GFX, SFX, mobo drivers etc)

mine crashed on the ID logo - sound card driver's needed updating.

also, any IRQ confilicts in system properties?

Your running a 8meg video card I'd start there as your problem. Low setting
or not. Your have a card that goes back to the P2 time. It time to upgrade,
also have you installed the lastest q3pointrelease_132.exe.

You only have to run the 1.32 patch if you are playing the game on line and
using the default game browser makes no odds with the graphics problems, the
original poster could get a geforce 4 128 meg AGP for has little has Ł35 uk
and then get around 216 to 358 FPS depending on settings and demo played oh
and of course patch version.

i run an 8mb card no problem i do run ver 1.16 i can even run a dedicated
clan server .note laggy due to slow cpu and 192ram
i have gotton the lockup but only when trying to load a mod such as ut or
generations since they dont work on 1.16 only 1.32
now as far as the card i dont have a lot to say about matrox

do u have multiple installes of full ver?
if so u must us add remove programs
look for the q3pointrelease

This has happened to me a couple of times as well...

- Might be a long shot, but remove all other CDs from your CD drives.

- Delete the q3config.cfg file (and temporarily rename your
autoexec.cfg, if you have one). Let the game generate a new q3config.

- Get the latest version of punkbuster. If that doesn't help,
temporarily set both sv_punkbuster and cl_punkbuster to 0 in your
config, and try again.
