I am either totally confused or have a real problem....

I just purchased a copy of Quake (I've been playing Quake II for a while and
wanted to check the original out).

Winquake runs fine (looks pretty lousy though), but I can't get GLQuake to
run at all. It indicated that I am missing a glide2x.dll file. Where can I
get this file, and more importantly, why do I need it? This is a retail
version and I'm running a TNT card!! Where the heck does Glide come into
play with this??

Any help appreciated.

OK, I got that one figured out...

Delete the opengl32.dll from the quake directory.

Now how do I adjust the lighting? I've played with gamma 0 - 5 but it all
looks the same.

I know in Q2 you can use gl_modulate .. is there an equivalent command for
Quake?

It's been a long time since GLQuake asked for GLide2x.dll so it sounds
like you're running an old version anyway, prolly 0.95, the latest ones
are 0.97 (official) and 0.98

IDGamma, it puts a new PAK file in the Quake folder with a brighter
palette.
