After Reading "monsters II" I thought I'd just throw a few more
ideas for any of you folks who are into making monster textures and such.
these mayeb not be able to get created until the final version comes out
and we can make all-new monsters, but, I'm bored so I'll rattle some off
now anyway :)

1) People who can walk onto walls and ceillings ( like that guy
from that old movie, The Labryinth, forcing people to use mlook). would
have to make them pretty weak.
2) A Beefier version of the dog (multiple heads? something like
the dog that gaurded hades in greek mythology.. Cerbus? something like that)
3) a small dragon like humanoid .. with wings ..
4) Some more undead, a undead grunt maybe?
5) Giant Snake, hard to program, but could be cool if it spat
projectiles or something to that effect.
6) A Male Medusa type creature, minues the snakes on the head,
and pop on another set of arms, maybe wielding swords
7) A Giant, maybe 1.7 times bigger then the player, with a big
hammer, slow, shakes the ground a little when he swings and misses.
8) If there was a level with enough open space, I mean, ALOT of
open space, someone on horseback would be really nice, give the horse
armour so you had to aim and try to pick of the guy ..
9) Slim elfish character with throwing daggers/axes
9) Minotaur type character? maybe too much like the giant, who knows

I could do this all day, but thats enough for now, anyone like
these? not like these? why? please respond, I may try to make some of
these once the reg'd version comes out, but please. feedback would be nice.

That would be dull, how about an undead shambler?

Why male?

Medusa without the snakes = normal person. Not so origional...

I like that idea.

Chainsaws are better...

Sounds like you're describing the ogre.

Shakes it a lot when he hits...

> 8) If there was a level with enough open space, I mean, ALOT of

I always figured those knights looked a little out of place...I doubt it
would take that much space for a horse to run around though. (An elephant
with a castle on its back would need a lot of space...

9) Slim elfish character with throwing daggers/axes

Zombies are slim, and they throw better stuff than daggers.

> 9) Minotaur type character?

How about just a bull? Piss it off, and it charges.

Personally I think most of these are boring. With an engine as powerful
as quake's, it seems silly to program wimpy things like elves.

Everyone, think BIG! Think brotosauruses with artillery guns on their
backs, think walking volcanos, think massive rock monsters that blast
out of the ground, think helecopters that fire rockets all over the
place!

Think Cthon! He's no elf...

actually, I like the elf idea. They could climb up in the rafters and
chuck bricks at you, laughing and yelling "uck-fay!! uck-fay!!"

Hmmm creature ideas... here's a couple..

How 'bout the skeleton from the ITS demo?

Or (and I really like this one) 'Death' like in the 'Freighteners' movie
trailers. It would be cool if he could like 'beckon' you. Like there's 1
in the level, he can't be beaten, he can go thru walls, and if he touches
you he takes a shitload of health off you. But he's awfully slow...

Or instead of not being able to kill him, you can but if you do, nothing
else could die (hell then YOU couldn't die... few holes there but an idea...)
cause death couldn't come to collect...

Shit... he'd be tough to avoid. He would certainly add to the nightmare
difficulty setting...

How about some mechanical monsters:

1. A *SMALL* hovering ball that shoots nails and darts around alot? Not the
best shot, but very hard to target.

2. A small tracked gun, ala the movie "Maximum Overdrive"

3. Small Spider like machines that attack with quick jabs (LOOK DOWN!!!)

4. MechWarrior-style armored machines. Multiple weapon choices.

Well, there's some basic types!

yea... an add-on package "Quake goes Jurrasic".
Why guns? i think you would be wetting your pants enough if you have that
bad-ass t-rex in your ass with the whole ground shaking :)
and some cave men in there would be nice too

I like you idea of having a Death Character. REminds me of that old
game gauntlet. I especially like the idea of an unstoppable slow one
that could go through walls. So in the back of your mind you know your
running for you life and got to find that exit quick. But I think it
would be cool if he were a seldom trap. Like if you got to greedy and
went for that pentagram of protection that was suspiciously in such a
calm place. ie. too easy to get that pentagram of protection. So like
it's boobie trapped to summon him. ie. a deathtrap. But knowing that
he's constantly on your tail you know you have to keep moving, and not
spend to much time dilly dallying around. Your sentence for getting to
greedy. But then I was thinking you could put an artifact that will
banish him. An artifact that does something bad to you. Like
temporarily make your health and armor go real low. Maybe makes it so
you can't use anything but the axe for awhile. Make it so you lose all
collected ammo period and thus leaving you to have to go collect
more.(but might be to drastic, cause it could paint you into a corner
for the whole game). So maybe instead make it so you keep ammo, but
lose all weapon except starting weapons(so you'd have to go back collect
the weapons again. Perhaps too devistating, if the weapon isn't on
future or present level, since you can't backtrack levels.)

I think this could have interesting twists in DMs. Like if someone
released him. They'd want to make sure they get the artifact. Have it
so that death attacts all who haven't gotten the artifact without
prejudiced. So perhaps instead of the artifact banishing Death, it
makes you immune for that level. So you could I guess, name it the
artifact of Immunity.

How about a shapeshifter that disguises itself as a power-up or weapon
etc. When you get close turns into one of the other monsters. Either
handle it that it's based on a random result making the possibily to
become one of the more menacing monsters less probably to more tougher
the variety of monster. OR. Have it based on the better the power-up it
disguises itself as the meaner a monster it chooses to be.

Imagine you see a Quad-damage and run up to grab it, but are surprised
by it not being a Quad-dam but a shapeshifter that is now a Shambler.
Would make you want to think twice.

Or you are faced with a shambler so look around for a Quad-damage to
help you fight one. You see one in the corner, but the above happens.
Ooops now you are faced with two Shamblers. Should've fought the
Shambler the hard way.

Very cool. And make it so when it touches you, the sound effect is
like a high pitched scream! Think of it. You're stressing to get out
of the level since you just released 'death', you run into a very dark
room. You stop for a moment, look around to get your bearings while,
unknown to you, 'death' just came through the wall behind you and
grabs your shoulder. EEEEEEEEEEEYAAAAAAAAAA!! :) You'd be doing
your laundry the next day, I'll tell you that.. ;>

Oh great, so we would have to upgrade quake every week or have a different
version than our DM opponents.

We can download them for free ourselves. Though, I *WOULD* like it if id
made a massive collection of all of our creations, and put them in quake2.
Imagine, they could set up the game to be made of 100 episodes, inhabited
by 90 different monsters! (Guess this would have to be CD only though.)

Sorta like the big purple library monster in AITD (hey- is that made
of particles? So quake isn't the first 3d game to use particles. Maybe
have one weapons that could kill it, and limit it to a certain area.

Oh damn, he got me started.

An animated toaster that fires superheated slabs of flaming bread.

A wandering juke box that interminably plays Lawrence Welk, LOUD.

A jester that hangs around making obscene gestures in your face,
ruining your aim. He doesn't bother anyone else, of course.

Papers on the floor which stick to your feet, making noise,
causing loss of footing, and slowing you down or tripping
you when you try to run.

Bio-suits that when they expire eject you upward at c 300 MPH.

Faulty weapon reloads that jam your guns and wreck ammo.

A huge Slinky spring, with an attitude.

A giant spray can of deoderant that blinds you. Monsters
are not effected.

A smoke detector that goes off when you shoot, alerting
every monster on the level.

A room that's a giant clothes dryer. It spins as you
walk through, and you come out all fluffy, and CHARGED!

A urinal with a flush function that sucks you in.

NEXT?

My first decent Quake level is going to be a giant toilet, complete with plumbing
section and filling tank lounge. (maybe outer bathroom).
(was originally planned for Duke Nukem, but duke's engine isn't good enough)

>
> NEXT?

Exploding spray cheese proximity bombs... Lethal in deathmatch: they cover you in bright
yellow threads that are night impossible to clean off. (fire, rockets? Take a swim?)

Hand grenades that decide they want to be your enemy's friend, following him around
protecting him?

Hallucinogen beam... Screws up the draworder on your side and occasionally turns off
r_drawviewmodel and r_drawentities. (palette cycling?)

Repulsor armor that causes you to hover in the exact middle of a room until it wears
off, and repels all projectiles?

Some seriously annoying creature that, when shot at, turns around and heals you, but
constantly flees (on tiny gossamer wings) and becomes a constant nuisance.
(can't be killed)
(this one's taken for a buttwhacky temple idea that a friend of mine and I are doing)

Fireproof armor that, because of the density of the material, reduces your FOV and gives
you 9-year-old-wearing-too-small-snowsuit movement disorder.

Furniture that follows you around when you're not watching, and occassionally barrels
into you (kickrolling/kickpitching you) if you stop suddenly that is nigh invulnerable?

Of course, the obligatory 3d-game face-rapist-alien that clings amourously to your head.

NEXT?

No, You just have to keep the polygon count low.

The first creature im going to make is a huge box (20 times the size of
Chthon) with legs that just tries to stomp you to death.

Of course.. Gibbing something that big would probably halt the system.
