I've just seen the 3 most amazing LMPs of all - all 3 episodes of doom1 on
nightmare! (see <ftp site>/idgames/lmps/dht-exams/titles/d1s/d1s-sw.zip).
They were done by Steffen Winterfeldt, who also did that amazing doom2
nightmare run of map01 to map12 (dying on map13).
The 3 LMPs are beautiful to watch - movement is very smooth and purposeful,
shooting accuracy is close to 100% and episodes 2 and 3 end with the most
efficient disposal of the cyberdemon and spiderdemon I've seen.
Steffen must surely be the best solo doom player of them all. I'm wondering -
what is he like at deathmatch?!

There was some discussion on dht-exams about the apparent impossibility of
doing some levels on nightmare (starting with just the pistol and 50 bullets).
Some levels, like E3M6, are easy because you can skip most of the level.
Others, like E1M5 are difficult (impossible?) because it is necessary to kill
most of the monsters.
This suggests another category of LMPs - completing a level on UV with the
_smallest_ kill percentage (Gandhi rules?). To start off, I just had a quick
go on E1M5 and finished with 74% kills. How much better (ie _lower_) can you
get?

I have done e1m4 with 0% kills. Beat that :)

Indeed - Steffen has also completed DooM Episodes One Two and Four
(Ultimate DooM) in the fastest times ever recorded - each one in
under 10, yes TEN, minutes... There is also some talk of him doing
another great DooM II NightMare run !! - As a Special X-mas .LMP
present for us all, perhaps, but don't hold your breath ;-)

No doubt, that he is. He doesn't deathmatch at all often.

This is the infamous statement that DooM 1 Incubus was "Closed" -
made by some J. R. Hoof guy but he's only a D1M D1SG D1T D1GM D1I
D2M D2SG D2T D2GM D2I plus D1L and D2L so what would he know ;-)

There have been two more D1I qualifiers since then and somenobody
has recently uploaded another one.

You and I might not be able to complete E1M5-NM and E1M3-NM but
don't go around saying that they are "impossible?" ;-)

An interresting idea - but this would very similar to completing
the missions as fast as possible... E1M5 with 74% kills ? Hmm...
Nope - it's been done with under 70% - and I believe the current
record is around 50% - I'll check, L8R

It's harder than you think! Trying to run through the level only starts fights
between the monsters, and someone winds up dying. Took me about a dozen tries.
It was my D1SG free (still in /incoming I think....)

Really impressive! He really makes it look easy! Very well planned out.

Even though in the description of his setup says mouse & keyboard, it looks
like he's using keyboard only! What do you think? (especially you mousers).

I use the mouse, but I'm definitely not a quarter as good!

Link.

I have wondered about this myself. His movement is so smooth and precise that I
have a hard time beleiving that he is using the keyboard, yet his setup says he
does.

Wow, you must be pretty good :) He completed 24 consecutive Doom1 levels on
nightmare, so that means you can do 6? That's better than most....

I've played using keyboard only for a very long time, and I've played using
the mouse for a couple of months now, and the keyboard is definitely much
smoother to use. This is because you turn at a fixed rate until you get to
the part that you want to get to, whereas with a mouse you flick to where
you think it is, then make minor adjustments.

However, the "flick, minor adjustment" is slightly faster than "turn until
you're pointing in the right direction", so the mouse still wins out.

Especially how a 'slightly better' edge in Deathmatch can lead to a player
dominating the whole game.

I've just found an lmp of E1M5 nightmare on lmps/doom/e1m5-nm.zip
It was done by Ted Chauviere.
Steffen Winterfeldt has recorded E1M3-nm. Could someone please post this to
ftp.cdrom.com so I can get it?

Thanks in advance
