Thanks, Benell
Type doom -timedemo demo1 (or doom2 -timedemo demo1 ...) and after the end
of the demo you'll see two numbers: x gametics in y realtics.
(x/y)*35 is your doom framerate in fps.

Hmmm? I always have. In Deathmatch I play 2 screens below normal size
(full screen w/ status) at low detail. Gives me 20-30fps. In single-player
I play normal size hidetail, cos I don't need the fps. This gives 10-15
fps.

Wow. I've seen you denegrate your deathmatch skills on these
newsgroups before, but I didn't realize you were handicapped. You
might not realize it, but you would assuredly do better on a faster
machine.
On this subject, what's the all time record? The highest I've seen
mentioned was 40. Full screen-with status bar, using demo2 (per a
suggestion of Adam's) I get 45 in Doom II and 51 in Doom (P90 w/16mb
and an ET-4000 W32p), but what can a P133 do? Anyone up for some
bragging? I'm curious.

What's the frame-rate calculation, and how did you arrive at yours? I
have a 133 here at work, and a 120 at home, so I can probably do some
bragging... :-)

Must be a drag to go home to the 120 after working on the 133 all day.
;)
Make sure your machine is set first--I always test full screen
(w/status bar), hi-rez. Then type the following command:
doom2 -timedemo demo2
Doom II will load (giving a message that it can't locate demo2.lmp
--ignore this). When it's done playing the demo, it will provide you
with two numbers, gametics and realtics. Divide the first number by
the second number and multiply the product by 35. The result is your
framerate.
The reason I use demo2 is due to a suggestion made on one of these
groups (I believe by Adam). Seems that the same version of demo2 has
been used in all versions of the game, allowing for cross-version
comparisons.

Yeah Doug, I'd definatly like to see that.. you and your one frag victory
;>
I was able to gain another two frames by running speedisk and moving my
doom directory to the front.. I'm up to 32-33 now with a 486/66 at low

In the RGCD FAQ, posted weekly to r.g.c.d.announce, you'll find:
3G. How can I take screenshots in DOOM, DOOM II, Heretic?
Start them with `doom -devparm', `doom2 -devparm', or `heretic -ravpic'
and press F1 to create numbered .PCX files in the games' directory.
=> `doom{2} -devparm' will also display fps dots (fps = 70 / <dots+1>).

Only on the one game. I'm undefeated against ya so far, though we did
tie on Map11.
BTW, I did play your friend Kevin last weekend. I'm afraid I beat him in
both games. Now he probably hates me. :-)

That's plenty fast. Me, I'd take the frame hit, and play 1-step down
from full with normal detail. I spent most of my doom career playing
against a guy with a P90 with my DX50, and I held my own.

The other method posted (doom2 -timedemo) is probably more accurate, as
it gives you an average across a set demo (most people use demo1 it
seems), and then you calculate based on accurate data (ie gametics vs.
realtics)

My 133 (at work) with a cheap STB PCI card and 16 mb, manages only a few fps
faster using demo1 with a 55.2. I get a 63.0 with demo2. I still have
to test my P120 with a better ATI card at home.

What, more accurate than trying to count little dots on the screen?

It was my suggestion. I've verified this with doom2 -playdemo, lmputil and
good old filesizes :)
Yes, but we all have our crosses to bear... :-)

Yes, I found another post that gave the calc, which is all that I
lacked. I posted results on the 133 someplace.

: Yeah.. can you believe I played him this weekend and only beat him 69-64?
Whoa! Really? Better practice up then. You're slipping big-time. :-)
Kevin is an OK player, but you should be able to beat him handily. He's
too predictable (IMO), and occasionally sits still and/or moves around
like he's in slo-motion. Very strange. Next time you talk to him, ask
him what the score of our map11 game was. I didn't get to see it, cuz I
forogot to put the timer 10 in. (Oops!)

Yeah.. can you believe I played him this weekend and only beat him 69-64?
That's the closest he's ever gotten on map7 1.0. Something has really
gone wrong with my accuracy, especially with the shotgun.. I'm at a loss
as to what to do about it. I've never gotten 'lost' in a fight before
like that.. and his fanciest move is a plain circle and he can only do
it in one direction..
>That's plenty fast. Me, I'd take the frame hit, and play 1-step down

I've tried it.. just can't do it. Mouse speed is too high and makes the
screen flicker, and the smaller screen is too disorienting. Slower mouse
speed makes it impossible to make all those leading rocket or plasma
shots I love so much, and fancy BFG angles are impossible.
The real problem, again, is my accurracy is in the shitter. I used to be
so good I woulden't even bother using a weapon other than the shotgun,
now I'm almost afraid to get into a close up shooting match. I guess the
easiest excuse is to point out that I used to play two or three matches a
day, not one every two weeks or more..
