POCKET BOOKS ANNOUNCES
THE PUBLICATION OF DOOM(tm)
Pocket Books and id Software have announced the publication of four
novelizations of the phenomenally popular DOOM computer software games, which
have "grown from a techie cult hit into a mainstream marketing phenomenon,"
according to the Wall Street Journal. DOOM's realistic texture-mapped 3-D
graphics, intense stereo sound, nonstop action, and the ability to be played
solo or against other players across phone lines or in office networks have
made it the number one computer game in the world.
Two mass market paperbacks, based on the storylines of DOOM and DOOM II,
priced at $4.99 (US), are scheduled for release in August 1995. DOOM: Knee-
Deep in the Dead and DOOM: Hell On Earth capture the sight-and-sound spirit
of the original electronic masterpiece which over an estimated 14 million
people have played. Two DOOM-related stories are also scheduled for release
in 1996.
Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of Pocket Books said, "As we've seen
with our very successful Star Trek(tm) program and other multimedia
projects, there's a huge audience for tie-ins like these. DOOM's popularity
as a computer game practically guarantees its success for us. We are
confident that DOOM will deliver." Pocket Books has released over 145
fiction and nonfiction Star Trek-related titles which now number in
upwards of 65 million copies in print.
Jay Wilbur of id Software agreed, "The DOOM novels will add a new dimension
to our already phenomenally successful computer software games."
DOOM is a trademark of id Software, Inc.
Pocket Books is a division of Simon & Schuster, Inc., the publishing
operation of Viacom Inc.
