I don't know if the following is common knowledge or not, but I just
found out about it.

Id is going to release a retail version of original DOOM. It will have
an extra nine level episode called "Thy Flesh Consumed." The whole
thing will be called "The Definitive DOOM."

What I would like to know is: will registered owners of DOOM 1 be able
to "upgrade" to this new package? That is, can I get the new episode
without having to buy the game a second time?

I agree! I've spent $115 on Id's 3d games, and I'll be damned if I'm
going to spend $40 on 9 more levels. I hope they do offer us registered
users of doom1 an opportunity to get this extra episode for about $10.

Especially when Doom1 doesn't even have the double barrel!

ready to be sent to reatil stores. Straight from the mouth of Romereo!

WADMeisters:

Today we cut the master of "The Ultimate DOOM" - DOOM gone retail.
This is a
Special Edition of DOOM v1.9 that includes the NEW FOURTH EPISODE - yes
9
more original levels from id! This 4th episode is titled "Thy Flesh
Consumed"
and takes place after the 3rd episode and before Hell on Earth. Also
included in this Ultimate DOOM is 5 hours of DWANGO time on the server
nearest
you.

If you already have a registered copy of DOOM and want The Ultimate
DOOM, you
can call our 1-800-idgames # and pay a nominal amount (not known yet)
for the
upgrade to The Ultimate DOOM (your name should be in our database and
you
will receive the new Ultimate DOOM box w/DWANGO certificate).
Otherwise, you
can just buy it in the stores.

You may all be interested in who did what level and what the map names
are;
this is prerelease info since The Ultimate DOOM hasn't been released
yet:

Map Who? Name
------------------------------------------------------
4-1 American McGee Hell Beneath
4-2 John Romero Perfect Hatred
4-3 Shawn Green Sever The Wicked
4-4 American McGee Unruly Evil
4-5 Tim Willits They Will Repent
4-6 John Romero Against Thee Wickedly
4-7 John Anderson And Hell Followed
4-8 Shawn Green Unto The Cruel
4-9 Tim Willits Fear (secret level)

Tim Willits is the reknowned Raven WADs creator and has been hired by
Rogue
Entertainment (developers of Strife for id Software). Tim had some
spare time
to create a couple cool maps for this Special Edition of DOOM. John
Anderson,
aka Dr. Sleep, also did a very, very nice job on 4-7 (which he
originally
titled CHIRON.WAD).

Amazingly enough, 4-3 was Shawn Green's VERY FIRST MAP! And 4-8 was
his
second map -- you can definitely see the improvement!

Good question. What *I* want to know is, will "Thy Flesh Consumed" be an
integral part of the game, or will it simply be an external PWAD that must be
invoked via the command line?

It is true.

id will be releasing DOOM 1 in RETAIL (sold in stores) form. It will
be called "THE DEFINITIVE DOOM" and include the original 3 episodes (27
levels) from the first DOOM, and as a bonus, a 4th episode, with 9 new
levels, called "Thy Flesh Consumed". This should be released VERY soon.

id will also release a CD-ROM containing 20 to 30 professional,
high quality, made for id only levels for Doom 2. This will be
called "THE MASTER LEVELS". No word on release date.

Rouge Entertainment is working on a game called STRIFE. Which will
run on an enhanced Doom engine, and set you in a RPGish style game.
Release is set for Fall '95.

Heretic 2 will be out by Summer, with a major overhaul of weapons,
monsters, and character capabilities. Patch for Heretic 1 v1.0
should be out by the end of April.

Another game that looks pretty cool is Terminal Velocity. This will
**NOT** run a Doom engine, and it not by id or any affiliates as far as I
know, but, it kind of looks like a cross between Descent and Magic
Carpet... a little more on the Magic Carpet side.

If you are using Netscape v1.1 Beta 3 (or an earlier version may do it),
just click on the following to visit id Software's World Wide Web
Home Page:

http://www.idsoftware.com/

Enjoy!

It will be an integral part of the game: an official episode 4.

I believe Terminal Velocity is the new game out by Lucasarts, and thus it
looks similar to their Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones game, etc.
I've played a demo, and it should be good.

No, that's Full Throttle. The demo is on the Dark Forces CD, right?

Terminal Velocity is a flying around Doom/Descent type game that looks
neat. There are screenshots on the web somewhere, perhaps on Hank's page.

Note followups.

Are there 2 Terminal Velocity's? The one I know is by 3D Realms, an Apogee
division and looks indeed like a Descent / Magic Carpet combination.
There's only a slideshow out (ftp.uml.edu:/msdos/games/3drealms/tvshow.zip),
no demo.

No, I made a mistake. I was thinking of "Full Throttle".

Exactly... I saw the screen shots on Hank's page... good write up
as well...

HAHA... Yes, Thy Flesh Consumed will be intergrated into the game,
and I just read that it was MASTERED yesterday. Cool beans. AND,
the box will look different than the mail order version of DOOM 1,
and will be sold right next to all the Doom products at your
favorite software store.
