I get the message "Game mode indeterminate" and the game fails to start
when attempting to run Doom2 under Windows 95 on a Pentium 90 with 48MB
RAM.

It worked OK yesterday according to my son.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Select the appropriate IWAD from the scroll-down menu in Doom95, which
is either (Ultimate) Doom (DOOM.WAD), Doom2 (DOOM2.WAD) or Final Doom
(TNT.WAD or PLUTONIA.WAD). At least, I think that is what is wrong now
;)

I get this when I start Doom running, and the working directory
is wrong. Example: instead of being C:\Doom2\, it's D:\Games\.
As far as I can tell, this is the error message when Doom.Exe looks
for the main Doom.Wad or Doom2.Wad file. If that isn't in the
working directory, the program gives up with that error message.

I also have DOOMIT version 5.9c that has the correct path in its config
section. No dice running a WAD from there as well. I can bring up the DOOMIT
screen, but get the error message after selecting and trying to run a WAD.

I don't have Doom95, but I will download it later to check it out.

I currently have version 1.9 of DOOM II for DOS.

Er don't :) Stick with normal DOS Doom, since it's way better anyway.
Your error message "game mode indeterminate" means that it cannot find
the appropriate IWAD, and I assumed the engine couldn't find it because
you were running Doom95 with the wrong option selected. In DOS, just
make sure the exe and wad are in the same directory.

...I get this error when I accidentally put both Doom.wad and Doom2.wad
(or Doom1.wad and Doom.wad) in the same directory without re-naming one
of them to some other name...since Doom.exe v1.9 will run either one, it
gets hysterical and refuses to launch if it encounters *both*...

Both the EXE and the WAD files are in the same directory.

Well, precisely how are you starting Doom2? From a DOS prompt, a shortcut, or
a "Run" dialog box? You'd never believe how much difference that makes.

Perhaps your doom2.exe is corrupted... try re-installing it.(uninstall
first)

Not a bad suggestion, but my son months ago managed to lose/lend/misplace the
CD so I don't have that option at the moment. :(

I have about 8 million or so WAD files, but none named DOOM(anything).WAD.

Is one named TNT.WAD or PLUTONIA.WAD? If so, you have too many IWADS...

THAT is your problem. :.(
You don't _have_ an Iwad that your executable can use! You must
re-install.(you need an Iwad -- Doom.wad Doom1.wad Doom2.wad Tnt.wad or
plutonia.wad)

good luck, another new game is only 15 bucks....

P.S. What is an IWAD as opposed to a plain WAD file?

You might be better off re-installing Doom2... much faster then
retrieving it and by now you know for sure you have all files needed to
play.

> P.S. What is an IWAD as opposed to a plain WAD file?

An IWAD is an official id Software out-of-the-box WAD that contains all
the Doom2 level and graphics data, a PWAD (usually called just 'wad'
around here) is a third-party WAD that replaces some of the IWAD stuff
(eg. a level).

I restored the DOOM2.WAD file from my backup and now the game works!

I figure my son deleted a few more WADs than he meant to ... =80

Now I know what an IWAD is... ;|

Are you saying that there is a difference in performance?

Not so much performance as control. Doom was made for DOS, and I feel that I
have more control over it there. I don't have to worry about where I
put the shortcut, punching the command line params in in a Windows dialog box
(where I don't have DOSKEY to help me), working directories, or any of the
other Windows 95 "features". Normally I'll shell out to DOS and abandon
Windows 95 entirely, thus sparing me from accidentally hitting that accursed
windows logo key, or accidentally hitting tab while strafing (which to Windows
is alt+tab.... changes to another windows and completely disrupts me).
