Hi DOOMers!

Now that old classic DOOM (1-2) are released on Steam, what are the best
DOOM clients to use for Internet multiplayer, especially
co-operative/co-op.?

A few years ago, I tried Doomsday. I loved its graphic and audio engine
with their addons (e.g., high textures), but its online play was lacking
and I couldn't find people to play with especially with co-op. I looked
at other clients, but I didn't like the old sprites and MIDI. Are there
anything else I missed?

Thank you in advance. :)

Skulltag seems like the engine of choice for online deathmatch. No idea
what the co-op support is like (there's some kind of co-op vast melee
against hordes of monsters, but playing the classic levels with multiple
players, it ain't).

Bummer. I loved DOOM with co-op on dial-up even through SirDOOM. I was
hoping to respark that again. Man, I'm old. :(

Well, hang on, I'm not saying Skulltag won't _do_ classic co-op, I'm
saying I don't know. You might also find the vast melee fun, a lot of
people do.

Prboom and others will do classic co-op but does anyone play?

I play using prboom (Linux)--not often though.

Skulltag has an OpenGL renderer. Not as fancy as Doomsdays but there is a
hi res texture and model pack you can use with it.

Put those in the skins folder.

Thanks. Yeah, not very pretty like Doomsdays. :(

Zandronum - http://zandronum.com/download

> Skulltag 98e was succeeded by Zandronum, which is made by the same developers after the original creator moved to another project. Zandronum has two major advantages over Skulltag. The first is that it supports up to 64 players online per server. The other is that 3D floors, which were an OpenGL-only feature in Skulltag, are now a software feature in Zandronum. Zandronum runs on huge number of PC architectures (including Linux) and comes with Doomseeker - utility to browse for available servers in network, automatically download the required data packs (wads) and start one's own server. Zandronum also allows players to play mods (...)
