**About DETH and HETH**
DETH v3.6 (DOOM Editor for Total Headcases) is a GCC rewrite of DEU 5.2. for
use with DOOM I, DOOM II, DOOM SE (Ultimate DOOM) and HERETIC. It was written
by PWAD authors FOR PWAD authors, so it is with the needs of such in mind
that
DETH has been configured.
Also included is HETH v1.06, the HEXEN editor! HETH offers full HEXEN editing
support, including scripts and polyobjects, thanks to the HEXEN-compatible
nodes building power of ZenNode v0.97a, which is also included with
DETH35.ZIP.
DETH has a slightly darker interface that is easier on the eyes, but it has
the same DEU-commands that we have come to know and love. Full-featured,
no-nag freeware, with a user-configurable menu system, DETH 3.5 is the editor
of choice for discriminating PWAD authors.
--------------------------------------------
Here are just a few of the main features of DETH 3.6 and HETH 1.06:
Edits DOOM I, II, Ultimate DOOM, and HERETIC and HEXEN (using heth.exe);
All data is in user-editable files (Things, LineDefs, Sectors and more);
*This means you can now create your own menus, configure special
sector and LineDef colors;
Textures/Flats/Things displayed while editing;
Texture Browser;
Drop to DOS mode;
Change video modes while editing;
Texture-caching option for slower machines;
Elegant button bar;
PWAD Browser;
Doors shown in key colors (optional);
Auto-map style;
Improved Error Checking with "check all" function;
UNDO function;
HOT KEYS galore for quicker editing;
Rotate Things/Sprites with , and . keys;
Thing/Sprite indicators gussied up for easier viewing;
Vertices shown as small squares, making Zoom editing much easier;
Grid from 1 to 1024 pixels;
2 extra Zoom factors for those really tight places;
Automatic X and Y alignment of 2-sided LineDefs, including upper and lower
textures; aligns both 1st and 2nd SideDef at the same time (read
TEXTURES.TXT). This means no more barfing when you want to align
a SideDef that has no Normal texture;
Flagged LineDefs show in differing user-configurable colors;
<F>ilter to show Things on map according to skill level and/or DeathMatch/
Multiplayer;
Much more!
Please read below for a short list of some of the new functions and
features added to DETH v3.5.
------------------------------------------------------
A RESPECTFUL NOD:
In deference to Raphaël Quinet's request concerning the use of the DEU name,
the authors have chosen the name DETH for their editor, though it is based
on DEU GCC 5.21. Many thanks to Mssrs. Quinet and Wyber for their hard work,
generosity, and selfless contributions to the DOOM community!
DETH 3.5 was written by Antony J.Burden and Simon Oke.
Technical support, beta testing, and publicity provided by Dr Sleep.
------------------------------------------------------
KNOWN BUGS:
None, except: There have been reported difficulties with ATIMach64 cards.
Since
the problem is not consistent with all users of ATI video devices, this may
be
a combination of the GCC video drivers in DETH and system configurations.
Thought
it only fair to warn ATI users that conflicts are possible.

Changes from DETH 3.50 --> DETH 3.60 BETA (Compiled on 4th January 96)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------
Changes/Additions
-----------------
DETH and HETH are now in the one zip file.
Any changes/additions from previous versions of HETH now also apply to DETH.
Config files merged.
The source code has been stream-lined and a lot of function calls
have been re-written and tidied up, the result is a slightly smaller
execuatable and better/smoother functionality.
New friendly hightlighting of the information boxes, when an area is
highlighted blue, it means that you can click that area to edit it.
Cleaner dragging of objects, you may not notice much here, but be assured,
it is cleaner and has slightly better screen redraw.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Changes from DETH 3.00 --> DETH 3.50 (Compiled 21st December '95)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
------------
Bugs Removed
------------
Filter option removed, until I have it working again :-)
Grouping of PWADs fixed, went wrong when I added the new front-end.
-----------------
Changes/Additions
-----------------
1) New button bars; can be turned on/off with the 'buttonbars = true'
setting.
Choose style with 'barstyle = 1' for top aligned buttons or 'barstyle = 2'
for left justified buttons. Also choose to close the buttons on use with -
'closeonuse = true' setting.
2) Change video modes while editing!
3) New Flats/Texture browser, click on the textures in the main edit screen
or choose Browse.... from the menus, and you'll be presented with a screen of
textures, use the mouse to select, escape to cancel, use the buttons or
PageUp and PageDown to page up and page down!!! (To stop the editor selecting
other objects when you move the mouse around just hold down the shift key.)
4) New 'initgrid' option; set this in the ini file for the starting grid
level.
5) New 'caching' option; set this in the ini file to turn texture cahcing
on,
but be warned, it will eat just over 4 megs, and doesn't have much effect
with
fast machines. This feature is turned off by default.
6) New "Drop to Dos" feature; use the quick key, button or enter "!" at the
prompt.
7) Increment floor/ceiling heights now has a limit of 8192 not 1024.
8) Pressing CTRL + 'F' in Thing Mode brings up Things Flags window.
9) Pressing CTRL + 'C' in LineDef Mode brings up LineDef Flags window.
(You may be wondering what 'C' has got to do with Flags, the truth is I'm
running
out of keys!)
10) Clicking on the information boxes will bring up direct editing of values.
To stop the editor selecting other objects when you move the mouse around
just
hold down the shift key.
11) Pressing escape when prompted for a field will set that field to 0.
12) Gamma setting added to ini file, also change this with the F7 key.
13) Scaled textures mean more of the graphic shown in main display and
more selection shown in browsers.
14) Can you find the hidden front-end message?
15) Sector height check increased from 1024 to 8192.
16) New Quick buttons and keys on front-end, this is still in development.
17) Click in the lower area to access the prompt or just hit "enter".
18) If a level is not found, then Deth will default to MAP01 instead of
crashing.
19) Now uses the same source as HETH but is compiled differently, so any
changes made to either program will be present in both.
20) Can now use Home and End to navigate through the texture browsers.
21) Added reference to my WWW homepage.
22) Took a few old/unnecessary options out of the ini file.
[See CHANGES.TXT for a complete history of revisions.]
