In the latest edition of the German "Schach Magazin 64" i saw an add
from HCC (Hobby Computer Centrale) about Mephisto Chess Genius 3.0.

It's a full page ad' with a header looking like this:

---------------------- Trying to reproduce ad' -------------START-------
Mephisto Chess Genius 3.0 1,5
Garry Kasparov 0,5

The World Champion already had the pleasure...
...now also you can try.

The new features:
- Reads ChessBase games with annotations, variations and special
characters (they mean !, !!, ?, ?, !?, ?!, etc.)
- Cooperation with Bookup databases.
- Management of multiple Opening databases - load the appropriate book
automatically.
- Shows the names of the openings on the screen.

ChessGenius 3: DM 190,-
do + Tournamentbook (used in London): DM 249,-
MasterBooks A - E: DM 59,-/piece
MasterBooks Complete (approx. 10 million opening moves): DM 249,-
Update from Genius 2: DM 100,-

System requirements:
IBM-compatible PC with 386 or better, VGA graphics, 640KB RAM,
3.5" Floppy drive

Recommended:
Mouse, 4MB RAM (32MB maximum can be used)
---------------------- Trying to reproduce ad' ---------------END-------

I was unable to find information about whether the engine was improved
over Genius 2.0, but I suppose it is (anyone?).

PS: I have no connection to the above mentioned companies whatsoever.

I have also been told that MG 3 will import PGN - haven't seen a copy
so can't confirm this.

UK prices seem to be 89.95 and 59.95 respectively. The upgrade
price seems to me to be too high really - IMHO doesn't really tempt
people who already have MG2 unless there is a large improvement in
playing strength as most of the import facilities are implemented by
programs available via FTP.

No - I was wrong or at least my "source" has corrected himself! He
has now told me that Hiarcs3 will import PGN, and that the thing that
confused him is that MG3 has a mention of EPD files in the manual - I
assume this might be an export file for diagrams (Encapsulated
Postscript Diagram?). As an attonement for posting lies, damned lies
etc. I will now give some statistics-or at least some estimated
gradings for the latest programs. All taken from Eric Hallsworth
Computer Chess News Sheet.

MG3 2475 Elo
Hiarcs3 2435
Rebell 6.0 2400
M Chess Pro 2376
CM 4000 2361
Fritz3 2325
Kallisto 2321
Socrates3 2210
Zarkov2.6 2204 (he reckons it is stronger than 3)

MG2 2432
Hiarcs2.1 2335
Fritz2 2270
M Chess 2260
Kasp. Gambit 2120
CM 3000 2108

Produces Postscript output? Not likely.

"EPD" stands for Extended Position Description, a format used by
Zarkov 3, HIARCS 2.1, HIARCS 3, Genius 3 and BOOKUP 8.1 to pass
positions for analysis.

For more information contact the author of EPD and PGN at
s...@world.std.com (Steven J. Edwards).

Please note that "al"'s interpretation of EPD is wrong. In the PGN
standard document, you will find the following on EPD:

16.2: EPD

EPD is "Extended Position Description"; it is a standard for describing chess
positions along with an extended set of structured attribute values using the
ASCII character set. It is intended for data and command interchange among
chessplaying programs. It is also intended for the representation of portable
opening library repositories.

A single EPD uses one text line of variable length composed of four data field
followed by zero or more operations. The four fields of the EPD specification
are the same as the first four fields of the FEN specification.

A text file composed exclusively of EPD data records should have a file name
with the suffix ".epd".

for your information you can get a copy of genius 3 from:

CB Software
37 Marsh Lane
London NW7 4QJ
UK

tel: 081 959 0670
fax: 081 906 8771

the cost is 42 pounds, these are very nice people to deal with, ask for angela
eyton. i was referred to them by the software developer richard lang. i would
be very careful of some of the U.S. vendors of this software. some are reported
to be less than scrupulous in their dealings.
