IU>Has anyone bought the TASCBASE chess database programm offerred by USCF? How
IU>do
IU>es this thing stack up to ChessBase, Chess Assistant, and NIC Base?
It's not available yet. Beta is out, and looks quite nice. It's like
NICBase 4.0 that never came out, and never will, since the programmers
of NICBase moved to TASC...

Good question! Unfortunately, the USCF doesn't really have any yet.
ICE received a beta version just this week, but it specifically says "not
for review," so I can't tell you that a position search of only 20,000
games took over an hour on my 386 :-) (The same search using Chess
Assistant is less than 20 seconds, even without the tree built). It does
seem to offer some more powerful search capabilities, but these crashed,
so I don't know... Overall, it seems harder to use. Perhaps the real
version will shore up some of the problems, but I doubt it will make it go
fast, or make it easy to use. Expect USCF to have some in July or so.
Also, all TASC programs have similar copy-protection (see my comments
elsewhere about their Tutorials, which I do recommend), so it is limited
to four machine installs, and will not work on two of the four systems I
tested - one of which used up an install.
btw, I don't claim to be an uninterested party - ICE already is committed
to Chess Assistant, which we feel is clearly the best choice.
