Here is a list of 139 books I have published, reprinted, or
contributed to
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/c/sam-sloan

There are more than that, of course. Right now I have 263 books in
print.

Think of all the toilet paper wasted.

Unfortunately Books in Print is no longer a print volume.
Sam, why don't your chess comments go into libertarian newsgroups?

The 150th book will be, of course, a graphic novel on the Origin of
the Masked Bishop. I signed an exclusive with Sloanie, and he's agreed
to keep my identity safe,...don't need some rogue ICA types coming at
me at the Midwest Class timewaster...BTW, if anyone's coming to that,
see ya there, patzers...I'll be wearing a fetching shade of green...

Everybody knows you're Kevin Bachler.

Well, you're wrong. Poor Kevin, having to live ME down...however, I
have fond memories of tangling with him and Suarez, many moons ago, on
this here board...mostly over ICA fees.

Well then you admit that you're actually Phoenix Jones!

Not sure who THAT is...some whack named Goran Tomic was convinced I
was Randy Bauer. I contain legions...

I'm not a figure of the US Chess scene (if you can imagine what one
actually is). My origins are not well- known:

When I was young, I was walking down an alley with my parents, after a
particularly dismal US Closed Championship. You know, the kind where
the
Russian flavor of the month cleans up, and Rustam Kamsky was tossed
out for
threatening the ajudicators. My elderly father, an accomplished chess
player in the manner of Nimzovitch, was suddenly accosted by a shadowy
figure...it might have been Don Schultz in an apesuit, but I'm not
sure.

After a scuffle, my parents were both clubbed to death with a give-
away
Saitek computer chess set, the kind handed out for the USCF limerick
contest. I
was left shattered, weeping, a boy with no apparent chess future.

I spent my youth and young manhood training myself for all manner of
chess
combat. I studied the "science" of Botvinnik. I labored over obscure
games
by Smyslov, Steinitz, and Torre. I pored through all the BINFOs,
letters to
the USCF editor, and Sam Sloan posts I could find. I duly prepared
myself
for a life of fighting chess crime. Or at least chess politics
stupidity.

But I needed a name, a disguise. Something that would strike fear in
the
heart of ethically-challenged policy board members. And one night,
while
cozying up to a fire reading Fischer's "I was Tortured in a Pasadena
Jailhouse," a bishop flew in through the window.

"That's it!" I cried. "A Bishop! Surely the pontifical piece, with
it's
implications of morality and rectitude, could send fear into the dark
heart
of such fiends as Cavallo!"

So I donned my mask, built my chesscave, and here I am. The
aforementioned
names have changed, or left, or have been disgraced, but the fight
goes on.

Why would he need that?

It's an origin story, pallie. Why did the Green Goblin need little
pumpkin bombs? Who can fathom the minds of a rogue's gallery?

Do a search and be suitably amused.

It was a weasel suit.

Seems like Phoenix fights crime. I only battle chess silliness.

In which this board has never not been swamped. This is why potential
new members run, screaming, in any direction but towards the USCF. Who
are the faces of the USCF? I give you but a sampler of the past
decade, please feel free to google and gasp:

Paul Truong
Sam Sloan
Bobby Fischer
Grant Perks
Kahlev Pehme (RIP)
Rustam Kamsky
Bill Goichberg (stop by his website www.checkmate.us if you need to be
reminded why NOT to give your money to the USCF)

The list goes on and on, a woeful collection of cranks, crooks, and
creeps. Join your local photography club instead.
