By edict of Google, we shall soon be no more, while 'research' might still be done, no 'new' messages is the message.

So who is going to set up a Facebook group and run it? Facebook seems like the best alternative, though might be an imposition upon the 'runner' to curb excesses while remaining broadly intellectually liberal of opinion.

The position might suit chess-loving 50 or 60 year old.

In this "Information Age" I think we have all found that cogent and decent communication is very welcome, in chess and in all spheres, and the considered views of a village are rarely wrong, though to attain such a forum requires continuous effort rather than just a bland 'freedom' to say anything at all,. which is anodyne and frequently destructive.

Who here wants to talk about our own continuation — we have, I understand, about a month. Anyone taking this on will have broad support from chess players, certainly from me.

Unless we have been misinformed, "This Group" is not "Ending".
Many groups would welcome Google no longer allowing postings -- at least
two of the well-populated groups that I read have been nearly ruined by
Google spam, and rescued only by KF'ing articles from "gmail.com".

A [much] better alternative, esp for those of us who have nothing
at all to do with FB, is to switch to one of the other providers. GIYF!

The group doesn't end, only google will stop giving access to it.

We'll have to find other ways to connect to Usenet, which is where this group is hosted on.

This server seems to give free Usernet access: https://www.eternal-september.org/

I want to use Thunderbird to access it, but it is difficult to get it working.

There are other news readers that will handle it. Just have to find them and get them set up.

Yes, there are. I use the Pan newsreader; since I frequent comp.arch, one
of the first to be attacked by spam, so that Google Groups already does
not allow posting to it, I had needed to do that some days ago.

I can't imagine using Thunderbird for Usenet but then I'm big into
binaries. I do use Thunderbird for my e-mail and am quite happy with
it and have been for the last 10+ years though dislike the cascaded
threads in the new release since you sometimes miss that there are
more than one message there :)

Yes, it's gratuitous and very well maintained.
You just need to sign in and get a password.

But that's not the fault of ES. Thunderbird
is truly a monster. Try Betterbird or SeaMonkey.
