A sad note for Canadian (and other) chess players:

Todd Southam, one of Canada's strongest players, passed away after a brief
illness on Dec. 12. He was 27.

Todd represented Canada at the World Cadet years ago. I believe he was
also Toronto champion some time ago.

As one of Canada's strongest juniors for many years, Todd also acted as a
second to promising juniors who came after him, I believe.

(Please correct me if I am wrong on any of the above.)

He will be sadly missed by his parents Elsa and Peter (who frequently
billeted out of town chess players at their home), his brother David (also
a very strong chess player, who has competed in the Canadian
championship if I remember correctly), his sister Karen, and his many chess
friends.

Todd's death notice notes that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to the Canadian Olympic Chess Fund, 2212 Gladwin Cr., E-1, Ottawa,
Ontario, K1B 5N1.
