Hi, has anyone come to any conclusions/opinions as to
which chess programs are best for analyzing specific positions?
Rather than perform the same search method as would be done in
a game, it should be able to provide detailed information on
a number of possible moves along with a number of possible replys,
and it should be possible to save the search so far to a file so
it can be continued at some later stage.

This is a very difficult question? There are a lot of factors here.
1) Can the program analyze from a setup position? Almost all can
2) Does it analyze in K best move mode- K being a number from 1 to n.
3) Does it have a screen history of PV lines?
4) Does it present nodes calculated (total and per second)?
5) Does it give search depth and hash table % filled?
6) Does it analyze PGN games?
7) Does it analyze a multi game file?
8) Does it write analysis to a text file or to the game itself?
9) Does it provide move annotations and or natural language advice?
10) Does it allow more than 1 engine to analyze different parts of the
game?
11) Does it provide a blundercheck capability?
12) Does it give voice analysis?
13) Does it move the pieces on the screen board as analysis takes place?
14) How many variations will it insert as a maximum into the game moves?
15) Will it analyze variations on the game?
16) Will it insert score evaluations in the move list?
17) Can the program analyze at the same time as the user is editing the
opening book?
18) Are there an extensive number of annotation symbols that can be used by
the engine?
19) How many time levels can be set for analysis?
20) How many file formats can the engine analyze?
