It works, but it doesn't work "fine". There are severeal features in CM8K
which does not work in Windows 2000, even with the 1.04 patch. Rated games
for instance.

I have Windows 2000 Professional with SP2, and I am running Fritz 6 (have
not purchased 7 yet -- yep, I am one of those that buys all his stuff
instead of stealing/"trading" it all), Shredder 6 CB and Classic, and Chess
Assistant 6.1. And, I have all the free winboard engines I could find loaded
up as well, without incident. I also have ChessPad loaded up, which seems to
handle winboard engines that Chess Assistant can't...

If I had to pick a single chess application from those, I would choose Chess
Assistant. However, Chess Assistant is the most expensive of the bunch.

If you are looking for something good but inexpensive (translation -- FREE),
I would suggest downloading ChessPad and a few winboard engines. Perhaps it
will not give all the same features as the commercial stuff, but the price
is right and it seems to be very stable. ChessPad even has some database
features too. And, there's enough variety amongst the winboard engines to
find one or more that caters to your style and strength. If nothing else,
this combination will keep you playing while you do more research.

I like ChessPad more than Winboard itself, simply because it is a lot easier
to set up, IMHO.

HTH,

Matt

I'm not doubting your word on this, but could you tell me which
engines ChessPad can handle that CA can't?

Just one other note: if you (any reading this) would like something
free and running Winboard engines, Chess Assistant Light (free for
download at http://www.convekta.com) also fully supports Winboard
engines as analysis modules and playing against them. CA Light also
allows you to automatically analyze your games with any of these
engines, and access the online server ICC. You can find out more at
the site also by reading the first lesson in the Software School.

So far, I have found the following engines misbehave under Chess Assistant
6.1 but work under ChessPad:

Blikskottel 0.7 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine
Holmes 0.8.0 - hangs under CA 6.1 after out of book
MFChess 1.0 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine
Nero 5.1 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine
TSCP 1.73 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine. I tried a recompile on
this one, to no avail.
Zephyr 0.61 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine

The following engines give me trouble but work to some degree under CA 6.1:

31337/Celes 0.40 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1
Aldebaran 0.7.0 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1
BACE - does not report search info under CA 6.1, might just be default
behavior
Delfi 2.10 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1
Duke 1.0 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1
Mustang 2 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1
StAndersen 1.2 - occasionally hangs under CA 6.1

The following engines do not work under CA 6.1, not yet tested under
ChessPad:

Amyan 1.5 - Hangs in CA 6.1 after out of book
BabyChess 11.1 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine
Betsy 5.26 - I forgot to write down what happened...
Crux 05.0a - Hangs in CA 6.1 after out of book
Golem 0.1 - Makes a horrible move then hangs in *every* game
Grizzly 1.31 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine

The following engines don't work under either CA 6.1 or ChessPad:

Cilian 4.13 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine, crashes ChessPad
KnightCap 3.3 - Hangs in CA 6.1 after out of book
LarsenVB 0.4.07 - Opens another window and looks specifically for WinBoard
executable
Mint 2.3 - CA 6.1 reports error in chess engine
Morphy 3.22 - Hangs in CA 6.1 after out of book
Storm 0.6 - Failed to write this one down
Tamerlane 0.01 - Failed to write this one down
Trynyty 1.0 - Hangs in CA 6.1 after out of book

The following engines work great under CA 6.1 (so far):

Chesterfield i5a
ColChess 8.0
Comet B37
Crafty 18.13
DChess 1.02
Deep Trouble 1.00 (opens extra windows)
Dragon 4.2
DrChess 2.1
EnginMax 2.88
ESC 1.09
Freyr M1067
Gromit 3.0 & 3.8.2
GullyDeckel 2.13
Horizon 1.3
Monik 2.1.1
Nejmet 2.60
Olithink 3.0.5
Ozwald 0.43
Quark 1.5
Queen 2.22a
Raffaela 0.0.5
Replicant 1.2
Sjeng 12.7 (had GPF problem before a system reload, now works well)
Skaki 1.19 (CPU hog)
YACE 0.99.56

I have tested about half of the Winboard engines I have been able to find. I
am still working through the list. I hope to have then all tested by the end
of February. All engines tested under Chess Assistant were set in their own
directories, were run on a 1.4G Athlon system with 256 M, Windows 2000P,
permanent brain turned off (except Skaki, which is always on). I had a major
system catastrophe and reloaded EVERYTHING a few weeks ago and have tested
all of this again.

I hope this helps you?

Yes, it does many and thanks for the list of problem engines in CA6.1
I'll look into it and see to it that it gets to the CA team.
