Hi everyone,

Looking to use the Nalimov tablebases in Fritz 8. In the
Tools/Options/Tablebases tab (going off of memory) there are 3 Path
boxes ... I assume I can put paths to the tablebases here? I'm
thinking I'll put up to 4 man locally, then 5 and some 6 (whatever
will fit) on a DVD.

Has anyone else set this up without problems? Is there any way to
verify Fritz "sees" the EGTB?

Many thanks,
Tom

At the most you can have three different paths to your endgame bases.
Say: H:\tbl\3and4man\ - H:\tbl\5man\ - G:\6man\

In the above H is a HD and G is your DVD-player.

Set up a test position to see if it works.
(Yes, it works just fine) :-)

Haven't used Fritz, ever. That's why I am coding my own programs!

OKe, but keep in mind the sizes:
3-man: 62 Kbyte
4-man: 30 Mbyte
5-man: 7.4 Gbyte
6-man (for now): 220 Gbyte
(Nalimov already has 80 Gbyte more EGTBs but didn't release them yet)

You can download them from my site, if you didn't yet do so...

ftp://anon...@darkside.its-s.tudelft.nl:21/

Or consult my website for further information on EGTBs

http://darkside.its-s.tudelft.nl/

Feel free to contact me directly at any time.

Renze

PS: When Eugene releases those extra 80 Gigs or more, they will be
available on my site as well! And this will continu untill I die! (And I
will not die very soon! At least that's what I expect)

A guide to Endgames Tablebase: http://www.aarontay.per.sg/winboard/egtb.html
... and that is the best one, as fare as I know.

Yes, you are absolutly right about the size - :-) A little dj-work on the
DVD-drive
is a necessity for this to work.

By the way, we are just about to set up a new server hosting the tablebases
in
such a way that you can map to it, using it like a local drive.

Thanks Renze, I didn't know about your site before so it's a nice find.

In the tablebases folder on your ftp site, I noticed there are directory
structures like "21", "21p", "22", "22p" ... just for my information, what's
the naming convention for? I assume fritz doesn't need the files in the
same directory...

Thanks!
Brian

The naming convention is directly copied from Hyatt's site.

The numbers indicate how many pieces there are on which side: 21 means 2
White (well whatever) and 1 for the other. The p is added for those
directories containing the EGTBs with Pawns. The Pawns EGTBs are larger
and require the other EGTBs in the non-pawn directory. That's why they
are splitt up.

Another reason is the fact that the number of EGTBs per directory is
growing, quite rapidly indeed (do the calculations during boss-hours)!

I have no knowledge whatsoever on Fritz or other specific Chess
products, except my own and Scid.

Don't have any... Just the URL, like Hyatt hasn't got any Banner either

maybe I will make a logo and a banner, but that is not to be expected
untill the future beyond my time-horizon.

There are probably 2 places where you can go wrong when setting up EGTBS

1) You setup the wrong path

2) The files are corrupted during download or generation.

To check for 1)

Setup each tablebase position and see how Fritz reacts. It should move
instantly regardless of time remaining.Next setup a position that is one
capture away from a tablebase position, and see if Fritz shows any egtb
probes.

This can be tedious to do if you want to do it for all tablebase files,
hence it might be better just to try out one position from each directory.
Since if it works for one file, it should work for all in the same
directory, unless the second file is corrupted.

Hence you need to check for corrupted files.

See www.aarontay.per.sg/Winboard/egtb.html#[A.11]
for details. I recommend using Wilhelm which can check the latest 6 piece
tablebases too.

I'm not certain if Fritz already does a check for corrupted files, so this
might or might not be necessary.

Go to "Downloads" -> "EndGameDatabases" --> and selects either the
3-/4-/5- or 6-man EGTBs for download.

For checking whether files are corrupted you really should use an
MD5summer. One can be downloaded from my site at

ftp://darkside.its-s.tudelft.nl/Crafty/TB/md5sum.exe

Using the md5sum files in the directories along with the files gives you
the number it should become after checking. All other programs are using
this check-mechanism and just putting a visual wrapper around it. But I
found out a little year ago that there are many checking programs out
there that go wrong with the very big files!

Good luck!

Yes. But no information, that's the point. The original poster asked for how
to check if the tablebases are working not where to download.

Yes. But wilhelm makes it easier for people who are not comfortable messing
with commandline apps.

Anyway if you take the time to look at my link, the use of MD5sum is
already noted in the link I gave. There's even a full page instructions :)
