Question from a newbie

Can someone recommend a good book for a chess beginner? I am having
problems with which opening moves to make? I have been going to Pogo
games and watching people play to get some idea, but at this point I
am yet to play a game against anyone as I am still very "green" at
this.

Are there any other, better online places to play where I could
initially watch games or software that I could get that could teach me
and at the same time, allow me to look at, move by move, games played
by the chess greats? I am on a fixed income and cannot afford a lot of
money.

Extract the zip file to it's own directory and run the program from there.

Chess Assistant 7 Light is a database program that includes 5,031 tournament
games that can be used for study. It also has a button that takes you to ICC
to play or observe online chess games.

Put all of the rar files into the directory where you put the
Setupcalight7.exe installer. Run the installer and put a check
mark in all of the boxes from crafty to Dtree. The installer
will extract the rar files automatically. After CA7 is installed,
whenever you log in to ICC(button on the tool bar of CA7), type
guest in the bottom text box and click send or hit the enter key.
Click the games tab to observe games.

There's no doubt which book I would recommend to a "practiced beginner"
(meaning, not a COMPLETE newbie to chess) to not just help with
openings but with all facets of chess. It's called "The Chess Doctor"
by Bruce Pandolfini.

If you really are "very green", then you should consider a book that
teaches basic endgames, like Pandolfini's "Endgame Course".

You might also consider picking up a copy of Chessmaster 9000 or 10th
Edition. There's a LOT of tutorials there for all levels, up through
"strong intermediate". And you can get CM9000 incredibly cheap now.
