Fritz5 arrived past friday.
I found that it has a lot of little bugs, which fortunately are not
particularly severe.
It comes with Fritz4 chessboard selected, I change to Fritz5, but when
I exit the new config is not saved.
It has the worst user interface I have ever seen.
But the real pain in the ass is that it can't convert my huge CBF
database into the new format.
Ok, I can copy 4000 games at a time, but it means more or less 280
copy commands.
This is absolutely idiot.
I made a mistake and I had to delete a few thousand games: it starts
putting out thousands of messages in a windows, which slow down the
operation a lot.
The documentation is obscene.

Not at all if you have Chess Base 6 to sell as a separate
database program ... ;-))

Stay cool.

I still name it the chess software of the year. To save the board config
just change the board size and colours and don't bother to click on the
Fritz 4 or Fritz 5 buttons. The user interface isn't exactly windows
standards but it is better than DOS interfaces and is not substantialy
different from Fritz 4 of which there were no complaints of the poster's
magnitude. It reads the new format but since it is not CHESSBASE 6.01 of
course it can't write the new format and it can't find more than 4,999
games at a time in a search. But it has more useful features for the
serious chess player than every other program with the possible exception
of Nimzo. But even Nimzo doesn't allow transpositions in it's tree the way
Fritz 5 does. Also Fritz 5 shows unplayed transpositions. And the
annotation features of Fritz 5 are second to none. And using the tree like
an opening book is unique. It's sparring and friend modes are great for us
patzers. I have found 38 flaws of Fritz 5 however and I will publish these
with my review of Fritz 5. They are mostly minor and certainly the all
around features of Fritz 5 do not merit the negative comments of the
poster. I haven't seen the documentation but the Fritz 4 manual was pretty
good.

-- This is a bug indeed: If TrueColor is selected, the color test
function of Windows which we use reports "0" colors. So Fritz defaults
nervously to the B/W board. Solution a) Switch to HiColor or b) Click
with the right mouse button on the board to get back your colors with
two clicks.

-- Then you haven't seen previous Fritz versions. What kind of screen
resolution do you use? 640*480 looks a bit cramped. What didn't you like
in specific?

-- I agree. It needs a function "Copy whole database" in addition to
"Copy selected games".

In physical deletions, each deleted game is listed on the screen and
written to a file protocol.txt. It slows down deletions by about 10%

-- I disagree. Why?

So is this in the pipe-line for Fritz 6.0 <fx, running, ducking and diving>

No, it's not. Had *I* written it, it would have been obscene (judging
from the content of my posts to rec.sport.soccer). ;)
