Hi all,
I recently joined the group and have seen references to CM5000,..
Are we refering to the CDROM game Chess Master 5000?
I'm wondering because I've seen the game in stores, never played a
cdrom chess game before and is wondering whether it's as interesting as
the description on the box sounds.
Also, is Chess Master 5000 much better than 4000?
Thanks
Lok

YES it is the CDROM version. It is not that much stronger than CM4000,
maybe 50 points. It has a lot for the non tournament chess player but for
the serious player get Fritz 5 with the add on Hiarcs 6 engine.

Adjusting some parameters in CM5k according to Walter Pilz CM plays much
more aggressive and attractive.
BTW the BS2830-test-suite makes CM5k solve 3 positions that CM4k doesn't
solve but also doesn't solve 3 positions that CM4k did sove... :-)

I have recently removed chessmaster and installed fritz5. I can only say
that i am glad to have moved off chessmaster.
Chessmaster continually broke its database connection (see the numerous
postings in this newsgroup on that subject) and also its database is
significanly inferior to fritz5. fritz5 has a few rough edges but i would
have to recommend it as easily being worth the money. Also, fritz5 is is
stated as compatible with windows95 and NT4.

What parameters did Walter Pilz suggest adjusting (and to what values)?
Thanks!

I dedicate using CM.
Seems you haven't had a closer look at it. Its adjustable parameters make
CM play very attractive and strong chess.

Right, the database function is one of the worst I know.

Maybe I should post them once a week. :-)

So let's see:

Style: Attacker/defender -4; Selective search 10 (risky, maybe 8 is
better)

Positional: Material 4; Mobility 103; King Safety 170; Pawn Weakness 125

The rest stays original

My personal advice would be to change passed pawns a little up to about
103-105 because they can be important. I also have material changed for
knight to 3.2 and bishop to 3.5.
