1.e4 d6 2.d4 e6!?

openings like the Pirc (he prefers London System as white, Nimzo as
black). I played 2.d4 and then 2...e6 came as a surprise.
I handled the opening well enough, building a big centre a la the four
pawns attack in the KID, then closing the centre and trading my bad
bishop for his good bishop. I was even a pawn up.
Eventually I lost after a blunder, but that's another story. The
opening itself didn't give me any particular difficulty.
But I am intrigued. Does this opening have a name? What are the chief
ideas? Is there a mainline? There are about three examples on my
database, all from the 19th century. Anyone know any more recent
games?

I dont think your going to run into this defense very often in the
future.....
Chess Player
is pretty weak at openings and if he wins it is not because of using this
opening for certain. It is usually because he suceeds in holding off my
attack and trading all the pieces down at which point he gets me in the end
game - his strong point. We are both amateurs- I'm rated about 1700 and
he's around 1800.
A typical game for us might proceed:
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. Bd3 Bd7 6. h3 Be7 7. Be3 O-O 8.
Qd2 h7 9. O-O-O
Playing white, the plan here for me is to get the space advantage, castle
queenside, and then nail him with the kingside pawn storm. Some later moves
for me (varying orders depending on what my opponent does) are g4, e5, Rdg1,
etc. Often I will sacrifice my king knight to gain a time advantage as
well.
Playing black, his idea is to give me the space advantage (this is the part
I don't understand) and mount an attack on the queenside. Providing I don't
blunder and even sometimes when I do, I usually beat him at this opening
game.
As far as a name goes, other than starting out as the French and going
astray rather quickly, I don't know of a name for it. As for recent games
I'll leave that to the database experts. Hope this helps.

For the record, Emmanuel Bricard is a French IM and was French
champion. He used to test lots of weird lines.
