I'm just about to take a business trip to Saudi Arabia, and have heard
that chess is actually banned in that country, as a "game of chance".
Well ... fair enough at my level, I suppose.
But I'm told that the customs authorities will actually confiscate
chess sets on arrival. That's bad news for me, as business trips at
least give me a bit of time to study on the flights and when stuck in
hotel rooms of an evening.
Anybody know what the score is here? Will attempting to take a pocket
set with me result in two years in a Saudi prison, or amputation of
pawn pushing arm?
And while we're on the subject, what about other countries where chess
is banned? I know that the Taliban supressed play in Afghanistan
during their time in power. But in what other countries is 1.e4 a
crime?

You assume what you heard is true, I would verify 1st then ask qusetions if
indeed this is the case.

Yep, it's true...

I had an aunt that lived in Saudi for 5 years. From everything I have
heard, it's not worth the risk of trying to sneak anything by.

Gosh I stand corrected, just cross Saudi off my list of places to go.

Can't you get a definitive answer to this question by calling the Saudi
embassy here in the states?

I left Saudi in November, when I went there in '95 I was given a list
of things not to take but most of them you can now take there now. I
think I've even seen chess sets sold downtown. The big items not to
take are videos of any sort, porn (of course), liquor, and pork. I
don't think a small chess set would matter, and if it did all they
would do is take it. Also when you get your visa to go there, ask for
a list of items from the Saudi embassy of items not to take.

I have a friend who spent a few years there and he attests
to the truth of this. His chess set was confiscated and
destroyed.

In fact, a friend of his was imprisoned for driving two
women to their home from the office after working late,
because they weren't relations of his!

His advice is not to go at all if you can avoid it.

If you own a handheld you could take a program with you. Of course I
don't know if they check these things as well, but this is the way that
I have my little chess set always with me - wherever I go.

Thanks everybody. I know I can check with the embassy - here in the
UK, not the US - but they would only give me the official policy
rather than the 'real deal'. I just wanted to know if anybody had
first hand experience, and a couple of posters have. So no chess set I
guess. That's really bad news, as I too take one everywhere I go in
the world. In Saudi, you can't drink either. Just what I'm going to do
in the evenings, I haven't a clue! With any luck, they will refuse my
visa application.
One other thing, though. Anybody know of anyone actually in prison -
in Saudi, Afghanistan, Iraq or anywhere else - for the 'crime' of
playing chess? If so, I reckon we should organise some solidarity.
Like one poster said, chess is a human right. If any player is
persecuted simply for playing, then FIDE should get up off its arse
and organise protests. And ordinary players should get involved in
letter writing, etc. The thought of someone being imprisoned for
loving our game as much as we all do - in the 21st century - is just
too barbaric.
Yours (sad at the thought of no chess and no beer for ten bloody days)

yes, let's write angry letters to countries where chess is forbidden,
instead of worrying about the crimes which happen next door.

Get a block of soft wood when you get there and carve yourself a set.
Then throw it away, or give it to someone, before you leave.

Iran bans chess.
I've heard Saudi Arabia doesn't like chess but I hadn't heard they banned it.
please keep us informed when you get back

according to Islamic law dice games are outlawed, backgammon specifically.
There is one hadith which says Muhammad (SAW) overturned a chessboard but that
is fabricated chess didn't reach Arabia until after the death
of the Prophet (SAW). of the early scholars only Ali (RAA) disliked chess. he
said "chess players are the worst liars,
they say death (mate) when there is no death, and on their deathbeads you want
them to say La illaha illah Allah (there is no god except The God) but they say
"checkmate"

according to Yusuf Al-Qardawi chess is lawful so long as there is no betting,
or swearing and it doesn't delay the prayer

I seem to remember that Anand became FIDE-Champion in 2001 by beating
Shirov in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
Not exactly what I expect from a country that has banned chess.

Rather strange, considering that chess supposedly originated in that part of the
world.

playing chess years ago in the lobby of a recreational facility, we
were asked to stop. i asked why and was told that if they allow us to
play, then "the old folks come in and start playing cards for money.
no games of chance".

my interlocutor didn't have the intellectual capacity to grasp that
chess isn't a game of chance.

rambling on here...

i read in a darts book about a world darts champ who testified in a
trial and convinced the judge that darts was not a game of chance.
that is, skill is 100%.

i thought that was very interesting indeed.

Malaysia is an Islamic country, but it encourages chess. In fact, our top
national player has obtained one IM norm, and is a muslim. I would be most
interested to know if Arabian countries really outlaws chess.

Hi again,

Who were "they"...???? I am not trying to play stupid here....But how is
it determined "what is gambling" and "what is not"...???

As far as I am concerned....There's always going to be a percentage of
luck in anything...(Great or small that is.....)

Later....

I thought of you guys in this forum as I watched the news last night; there
was a street vendor in Iraq selling cell phones and plastic portable chess
sets. So there's Iraq's current state of chessdom.
