You hold

K1043
KQ872
---
10542

At matchpoints unfavorable. RHO deals. LHO opens 1D after two
passes. Rho responds 1S; you venture 2H; and LHO bids 3D (opponents
do play support doubles) , which ends the auction.

Partner leads the H5 (3rd best from even length or lowest from odd),
and dummy flops Q976 93 A72 KJ76. (No, I don't know why dummy passed
3D either.) Trick one goes 5-3-Q-A. Next comes the D6-5-A, and you
pitch the H8 (std signals and discards). Now declarer leads dummy's
last heart, which you duck to declarer's 10 and partner's J. Partner
plays a third round of hearts, and dummy ruffs while declarer
follows. Now declarer leads dummy's last trump. Your remaining cards
are K1043 K --- 10542. Dummy has remaining Q976 --- ---- KJ76. Which
card do you pitch?

c5, just to let partner know to hold off on a round of clubs in case
declarer has Ax, Qx in the black suits. I think partner might hold
Jxx, Jxx, Qxxx, Axx and not raise hearts.

I don't see how the 4th round of clubs can come into play -- partner
hasn't got a singleton, so the spade ace (regardless who holds it)
will account for one of declarer's cards, at least 9 red cards we
know, so three club tricks max will occur in the hand.

It's hard to believe declarer would denude the trump entries from
dummy if declarer had AJ of spades so I think I can also spare a
spade.

You might guess that I was the other defender, holding AJx Jxx Q98x
Qxx. I was ready to win my trump trick and play on one of the black
suits to get my trump promotion (and probably SA and a spade if given
no strong clue, since that needed the least), hoping partner's discard
would tell me which black suit to play. Instead, partner pitched the
HK, which seemed to say "better luck next hand"....

Instead I sat there for 2 minutes trying to work out how the HK could
have been the right discard. All I could figure was that partner was
telling me he had no hope of an entry.

Of course, declarer can always make by winning the diamond with her K
and playing three rounds of clubs (hooking) to pitch a spade, but I
swear she was always going to duck the second round of trump to
me...she has here DJ ready to play before my partner even produced the
HK.

I would not pitch a club as declarer could have C Axx or C Ax and

That would leave declarer with S x H Axx D KQ10xxx C Axx or S xx
H Axx D KQ10xxx C Ax.
Pitching a club could allow declarer to win four club tricks.

Good hand, with sort of a moral for me. I was aware, in thinking about
and writing my answer, that I gave up on trying to figure out the
trump suit. That should have rung an alarm.

I still don't know what to play though. If I knew partner has the
spade Ace, then it's right to encourage in spades. Or if we play UDCA,
then a low encouraging spade is ok. But not playing UDCA, dropping the
spade 10 seems dangerous. Declarer might have Ax,Axx,KJxxxx,xx.
