Hi

I'm looking for some ideas for spot prizes for a fun-night.
We will have a few prizes for skill, so I'm really looking for odd
things that will arise more randomly, and things that you can play for
if the occasion arises, but that might upset your normal bridge.

First person to :

Be dealt a 7-card suit
Be dealt a 10-high Yarborough
Be dealt a void
Win a trick with the 2 of spades
Be dealt AKQJ in the same suit
Be dealt four cards of the same value
Trump an ace
Redouble
Open at the 4 level
Open with a 4441 hand
Go 3 light
Make 5 of a minor
Ask for aces
Win a trick with a non-trump 7
Overtake partner’s trick
Steal someone else’s pencil
...

TIA

To avoid confusion, I wouldn't advising calling that a Yarborough, which
traditionally is defined as having no card higher than a nine. You
wouldn't want someone claiming a prize and your having to turn them
down, or conversely someone failing to claim a prize to which they were
entitled.

The problem with some of these is that they will distort the bidding -
someone opens a 4441 hand at the four level, and goes three light.

PS As an idea for a spot prize, many years ago I saw a pack with
hearts and diamonds black, and spades and clubs red. Does anyone know
if they are still available

Opening at the three level with any 4+ card suit headed by AKQ. This
should be fun, the shorter the better:-)

- making a small slam + 1
- ending with 3 knaves in last 3 cards
- ending with a straight flush last 3 cards
- making the last trick with an ace

We give prizes here also - not based on "luck of the cards" - but a
fun prize where a leetle bit of skill is involved to achieve any
requirement.

- all a bit boring and just random depending on where you sit

yes

no.

yes if you like although probably too easy if people don't care about
the bridge result - it's probably not too tough to organise to trump
your own side's ace

sorry all of these are a bit dull

I also prefer prizes that involve some small level of skill rather
than just depend on what you are dealt. How much you want them to
'interfere' with normal bridge is us up to you. Other possibilities
that may be harder to win are:

Last trick made up of one card from each of the four suits
Bid and make 5NT

The difficulty with a lot of these is that they are too easy for table
to collude in at the cost of totally silly results.

Alternatively you could have a range of things people need to do, and
have them each draw them from a hat secretly, so that others don't
know what they are trying to achieve (or they may have to be
partnership ones). When you make your target you call the TD and get
your prize, showing your slip.

So many of the same items e.g. redouble, win a trick with a non-trump
7, ruff partner's winner would work. Or

- a trick made up of 4 cards in order (7-8-9-10 say)
- have an auction starting 1C - 1D - 1H - 1S - 1NT (plus any number of
passes)
- take a successful finesse against a card no higher than the 7

Perhaps you should also give an award for the most successful opening
bid made on less than 12 hcps and made with the rule of 18 i.e. two
longest suits + hcps = at least 18.

Prizes awarded at the british universities bridge festival - these are
generally good for a laugh, though they can distort the bridge:

- Bidding and making 1C tick.
- Bidding and making 5NT.
- Bidding and making 4C (the Gerber prize).
- Beer card prize (last trick with D7 to make tick, or defend 1 off,
with diamonds not trumps).
- First person to go for 1100.

Also, there was a huge hat that had to be worn by the last person to go
for 1100 or more. Though I suspect we scored rather more -1100's than
is common at your club.

I ran a duplicate tournament a while ago, there were going to be prizes as
you suggest, one was for the first bid and made slam.
I prepared the hands earlier and was a bit mischievous, I set up a freak
hand where four slams were available in each of the suits.
Anyway the event started and I prepared to watch the fun. They took the
hands out but before the bidding commenced I was called for a ruling at
another table.
When I returned they were playing the hand, the contract was 3 Diamonds :)

My feeling is that the prize must be unique. When everyone gets a
7-card suit or a yarborough or 4+ A-K-Q suit, now it is the luck of
the draw who gets it first. If that's what the prize is based on,
fine.

The weakest trump fit. But to qualify the pair must get at least an
average for the board. Must be six or less combined trumps to
qualify. 3-3 is better than 4-2, or 5-1.

The couple achieving the best overall tournament result after drinking
a whole bottle of Scotch. The prize? A bottle of Scotch and two
glasses:-)
