Instant Match Points

I have been on holiday for several weeks, and came back to discover that one or two of the players at Banbury want to play their version of instant match points.

If I have understood it correctly, this involves converting the score on each board to a match point score using a pre-determined scale (The same scale for all the boards). Rather like IMPs against a pass-out at the other table.

Has anyone heard about this idea, and could give me an internet reference ?

I have played this where the hands were previously played in an
international event and there was a traveller in each board with the
actual MP's from the event so you could convert your score to what you
would have got in the event itself.

If you wanted to do that it should be easy nowadays to get the deal
files and the MP's electronically for a suitable event like the European
pairs from a few years ago. Might also get the bulletin with some
discussion on the interesting hands.

There are two versions of instant matchpoints.

The more sensible one is where you have a set of pre-dealt hands and associated travellers which tell you how many matchpoints you get for any result on each board. This is how the worldwide simultaneous used to be run. Richard Pavlicek's site (rpbridge.net) has some suitable sets of boards.

or you could use actual travellers from e.g. the world pairs final which are available online.

The less sensible version I have never played. I think there is a 'standard' set of matchpoints to score against based on HCP which can be generated again from a computer-dealt set of hands. This is slightly better than scoring against a passout. I've not seen the scale for these, am merely aware that it exists.

p.s. the Pavlicek site also has booklets with a nice write-up of the hands.
A bit of googling gives quite a lot of history from the ACBL who run these events.
