Given their record over the past two years, how can they be seeded lower
than second?

With all due respect to the Truscott's, this seems a generous seed.
Doesn't the seeding "formula" consider recent accomplishments in open (as
opposed to women's) competition. I know Dorothy Hayden more than held her
own against the boys playing with B.J.Becker, but that was many years ago.

A very dangerous group at #7.

As usual, international stars don't get their due in NABC team events.

Age may be taking its toll, so this seeding could be accurate. Still, it
seems like an insult to some of the all-time greats.
BTW, did anyone else notice a few top players conspicuous by their absense.
Where are Kantar-Sontag, Kaplan-Kay, the Hog (Ron Anderson), Glubok and
Lev? What about client fixtures Goodman, Cliff Russell and George
Rosenkrantz?

Kent Burghard's article actually referred to the pairings on the second
day of the Vanderbilt. The first consisted of matches to reduce the field
from its original 86 or so teams to a convenient 64. These matches
were mainly 3-out-of-4 survivors along with a few 2-out-of-3's. Thus...
The Truscott team was actually seeded somewhere around 40, give or take.
They inherited the #6 seed when the original #6 (Kyle Larsen, Hugh Ross,
Eddie Kantar, Alan Sontag, Dan Morse, John Sutherlin) lost both of
their 32-board matches on the first day. As I recall, the afternoon
loss was to a team seeded 81, consisting of David Green, Robert Johnson,
Jeff Howell, and Yiping Wang, all of Orgeon. The evening loss
was to another team in the 40's (I think). Sorry, the daily bulletins,
especially on Monday, were not complete in their list of the seedings
and early results.
As long as we're here...

Rapee's opponents had been seeded 81 prior to an upset of the
48 seed. Those old men were friendly and played tough.
I was impressed by Garozzo's declarer play, perhaps because
(in contrast) he and Eisenberg did not seem to have the
depth of an established partnership in bidding and defense.

Edgar was the NPC in absentia for the team that placed second (Gerrard,
Kamil, Silver, Steiner). Word was that he is recovering nicely in NYC.
The Hog wasn't looking well, and checked himself into the Arizona Heart
Institute. Last I heard, he was in intensive care and not receiving calls
or visitors. Consequently, the Vu-Graph (oops, make that PenderGraph)
show wasn't up to its usual entertainment level.
Maybe it was the Arizona Rib Festival, going on outside the tournament,
that threw a scare into the "Hog" <grin>
