These days I find it increasingly difficult to communicate with my bank,
with the company that supplies power to my home, etc. I don't know
whether this is my fault, or whether these companies really only now
employ half-wits with a poor command of English. Either way, I
sometimes whinge about it.

So, to counteract my becoming a Grumpy Old Man, I like to praise
conspicuously good service when I come across it:

Yesterday, I tried to log into the English Bridge Union's web site. I
found that I had got my membership number slightly wrong and did not
know my password at all. I sent them an email explaining my problem. In
half an hour, I received a reply, telling me my correct membership
number and my password. So, a big thank you to their Membership &
Accounts Assistant, who had dealt with my email.

The EBU, like all other bridge organizations, damned well better be nice
to the old fogies who are their members. Otherwise they can prepare
to close down.

As recent discussions here show, not being able to remember username
and password is the least of it. Not being able to count to 13, not
seeing the card faced by an opponent, not being able to pick up a card
from the table, not hearing an explanation, not understanding an
explanation, forgetting conventions, ignorance of the laws - in
other words, in newspeak:
mobility issues, memory issues, hearing impairment, loss of
visual acuity, obesity, arthritis and podagra are the defining
characteristics of the modern bridge player population.
