That $200,000/child figure: Where did it come from?

The oft-qutoted statistic that it costs 200K to raise a child to from 0
to 18. Anyone got a cite for it? How reliable is it?

Note that even though I consider it probably accurate, it is probably
pretty much bogus statistically/scientifically, since there's probably o
assumption of a bell curve (a so-called "normal distribution"), nor is
is it likely that most families spend anywhere near that much. Still,
the idea is intriguing...

Anyway, FWIW, 200K in 18 years is $30.5/day. Is that frightening?
