The closing date for clubs is fast approaching. Remember that, unlike
most Sim Pairs, at least 50% of the fees are returned as prizes: in
normal English events it is between 10% and 20%. This is because it is
not a fundraiser nor a Charity event, so your players in your club
benefit.

Special arrangements for Australian clubs make it easier for them to
enter without worrying about currency differences, and I shall do
something similar for any New Zealand clubs.

But the number entering this year is a bit disappointing. Everyone
gets a booklet written by Frances Hinden [who often posts here] and her
husband, Jeffrey Allerton. So why not suggest that your club, anywhere
in the world, has a go this year?

Notionally the last Tuesday in June, but in practice any day that
week. I already have two ACBL clubs entering: how about a third? As
for Europe, outside the UK, only one club has entered so far! Please
try your club!

The early results are in!

Results for 134 pairs playing at 8 clubs in 6 countries. 3 Australian
clubs already, including Good Sports BC in North Tumbulgum, NSW, my
first Australian club outside Victoria. They have the early leaders.

CB Vallee de l'Orb, my French club, was first to post their results.

Sadly Brecon BC have had to withdraw their results when it was found
they had played the wrong boards. These things happen!

Results for 180 pairs playing at 11 clubs in 6 countries. 3rd and 1st

Results for 394 pairs playing at 25 clubs in 7 countries. The French
leaders' score has improved again, and is beginning to look like a
winning score with well over half the clubs still to come.

Despite another 7 clubs, there seem few good scores: the highest
newcomer is 8th. 4th and 5th have swapped.

Results for 637 pairs playing at 41 clubs in 9 countries. 12 more
clubs today. Actually, the website at this moment shows an extra club
and 22 more pairs, but it has both Kenya and Kenya Blue - and they are
the same section!

The French are still in the lead, but pairs from Kenya and Australia
are hot on their tail!

Results for 679 pairs playing at 44 clubs in 9 countries. 3 more
clubs this evening. Now they will just come in ones and twos. The
duplicate club has been eliminated from the website.

Problems occur in clubs, and two clubs have failed to register a heat,
Brecon in Wales, and Frodsham in England. In fact Frodsham is my
longest serving club. One of them had a problem with the make-up of the
hands, the other it was a traffic problem and the organiser did not make
it to the club.

This event is licensed by England, and the largest number of clubs by
far are from England, and over half from England and Wales. This makes
it very interesting that there is no English or Welsh pair in the first
five, the order being France, Kenya, USA, Australia and Iceland.

3rd and 4th have swapped places, as have 5th and 6th, and 8th and 9th,
but no newcomers in the top ten this time.

Results for 780 pairs playing at 51 clubs in 10 countries. A few more
clubs - but the big news is that a pair from the Friends Bridge Group in
Harrow [part of London UK] have come in with a leading and possibly
winning score. A pity in one way: I was quite looking forward to a
French pair winning.

Another English club, Pickering from Yorkshire, have come in with two
pairs in the top ten. 11 clubs to go.

Final results for 920 pairs playing at 61 clubs in 12 countries.
Maidenhead did not hold a heat, nor did they let me know!

After the results are in a fair amount of checking goes on, and a
major mistake was found in the uploaded scores from Traralgon BC in
Australia, as well as several minor mistakes - the most common one being
to enter an unplayed board as Passed Out! Anyway, after these were
corrected, one of the Traralgon pairs gained impressively, leaping in to
the top ten at 5th!

Despite this being a primarily English event - about half the clubs
are from England - I always am interested in foreign clubs doing well.
Additional prizes go down to 7th, and this included one French, two
Australian, one African and one American pair. For a long time I
thought the French pair would win!

My own club, Deva BC, who had the winners last year, had the largest
section with 17 tables, quite a way ahead of Kenilworth [14],
Sumarbridge in Iceland [14], and Bendigo in Australia [13.5]. But
really the most impressive was the Kenya Bridge Association in Nairobi,
who ran two sections, totalling 21.5 tables in all. The smallest heat
[as usual!] was at Dolgellau with 2.5 tables, the next smallest being 4
tables.

My thanks as always go to Anna Gudge and ECats, who do the scoring,
and Frances Hinden and Jeffrey Allerton, who write the booklet, and my
wife, Liz, who does a lot of the real work behind the scenes, like
putting the brochures in envelopes.

Wherever you are in the world I should be pleased if you might talk to
your club about entering next year. It is always held during the week
containing the last Tuesday in June, primarily on that day, but clubs
who do not hold Tuesday heats can hold it any time during that week. The
things that players like about this event are:

* Every player gets a booklet
* The prize fund is guaranteed to be at
least 50% of the entry fees
* Every heat winner gets a little package of
prizes, some money, a shield, and a pen each
* In heats with 10+ tables, second gets a little
package of prizes, some money, and a pen each
