Final results for 920 pairs playing at 61 clubs in 12 countries.
Maidenhead did not hold a heat, nor did they let me know!
After the results are in a fair amount of checking goes on, and a
major mistake was found in the uploaded scores from Traralgon BC in
Australia, as well as several minor mistakes - the most common one being
to enter an unplayed board as Passed Out! Anyway, after these were
corrected, one of the Traralgon pairs gained impressively, leaping in to
the top ten at 5th!
Despite this being a primarily English event - about half the clubs
are from England - I always am interested in foreign clubs doing well.
Additional prizes go down to 7th, and this included one French, two
Australian, one African and one American pair. For a long time I
thought the French pair would win!
My own club, Deva BC, who had the winners last year, had the largest
section with 17 tables, quite a way ahead of Kenilworth [14],
Sumarbridge in Iceland [14], and Bendigo in Australia [13.5]. But
really the most impressive was the Kenya Bridge Association in Nairobi,
who ran two sections, totalling 21.5 tables in all. The smallest heat
[as usual!] was at Dolgellau with 2.5 tables, the next smallest being 4
tables.
My thanks as always go to Anna Gudge and ECats, who do the scoring,
and Frances Hinden and Jeffrey Allerton, who write the booklet, and my
wife, Liz, who does a lot of the real work behind the scenes, like
putting the brochures in envelopes.
Wherever you are in the world I should be pleased if you might talk to
your club about entering next year. It is always held during the week
containing the last Tuesday in June, primarily on that day, but clubs
who do not hold Tuesday heats can hold it any time during that week. The
things that players like about this event are:
* Every player gets a booklet
* The prize fund is guaranteed to be at
least 50% of the entry fees
* Every heat winner gets a little package of
prizes, some money, a shield, and a pen each
* In heats with 10+ tables, second gets a little
package of prizes, some money, and a pen each
