The Thursday, January 19, 2012 episode (The Recombination Hypothesis) of The
Big Bang Theory on CBS featured The Settlers of Catan boardgame. Near the
beginning of the show a fairly good shot of the board could be seen of three
of the main characters playing Mayfair's 4th edition of the game. As best as
I could see by pausing and going forward frame by frame the board seemed to
be set up correctly for a three player game. And from the amount of
settlements and roads I'd say they were about 10 minutes into the game.

Often when I see boardgames on TV they're set up incorrectly. I guess most
shows just have some prop guy who has never seen it before throw it on a
table and scatter the pieces around randomly. I've seen that even with games
as common as chess; pieces in locations they'd never appear in a real game.

But whoever set up this game of Settlers went to the trouble to do it right.
You could clearly see Raj was playing white, Sheldon was blue, and Howard
was playing red. No one had orange. All the resources were in neat stacks
around the board, as were the development cards. And the number chits were
pretty well centered on the terrain hexes.

Of course the best part was the use of the classic Settlers joke (which
Sheldon didn't get) of "wood for sheep". Raj and Howard cracked up several
times as Sheldon kept asking for it. Also, the name of the game got a
prominent mention, unlike most boardgames on TV, that may be seen on a
table, but are never mentioned by name.

Kudos to the producers and staff of The Big Bang Theory!
