For those of you who know the game Status-Pro Basketball over the years the
rules gave most all of the formulas needed to rate your own players, be they
pro or college or what-have-you.

Several years ago Avalon Hill stopped making updates for this game (this was
long before the sale, so don't blame Hasbro). Anyway, a group of us who were
playing in a league at that time made our own set of cards for that first
year after AH stopped making updates. We only did that once and since then
our league broke up and I haven't played the game since.

Well, this past season I started thinking about dusting the game off and
sitting down with my son and giving it a go. I would like to make cards for
the players based on this past season (short as it was). I was also thinking
this would work for the WNBA as well. I have all of the rules going back to
the beginning of time, and have been able to work out all of the formulas
EXCEPT shot attempts (both regular and 3-pointers) I've asked around some of
our old league members, I've even sent an email to Don Greenwood asking if he
had any notes from days gone by, but so far no luck.

And now for the point of this post... Does anyone out have any information
about the formula for shot attempts for this game? If so I would very much
appreciate getting a copy of it.

Also, while I'm here, once I get this done if there is any interest from
former Status-Pro Basketball players out there I would be willing to share my
end results, perhaps even posting them to a WebSite for download. So even if
you don't have the formula let me know if you're interested in getting a set
of cards.

Hi Mark,

I'm very surprised to see anyone who still knows this game. Over here in Germany
board games are very popular in general, but nobody ever heard of this game. For
Germany this might be ok, because Basketball isn't as popular as it is in US. But
what makes me wonder is, that I've never read anything this great game in any
newsgroup at all, not even from people in the US.

Now to your question. I'm not quite sure, if I get your problem right, but why
don't you use the average shot attempts per game ? Every serious statistic I've
seen so far (for example "Doug's NBA & MLB Stats Home Page" at
http://shell.rmi.net/~doug/) includes this numbers.
(Earlier versions of Statis Pro Basketball don't use shot attempts but a
combination of shots, rebounds and fouls per game called "Stamina".)

Maybe I missed the point, but even so, I'm very interested to get your results
:-)

Thomas,

Thanks for your reply. You are right of course as I figured out this
afternoon on my own. My problem was I got caught up in trying to follow the
pattern of the other ratings used in the game, like rebounds, which use a
Total Rebound / Minutes Played formula (of course then the assist rating is
slightly different from even that). So I kept trying to work on a shots per
minute played rating instead of the correct shots per game.

Anyway, that was the answer I was looking for and couldn't find until I took
a few days off from the search. Then after just a few minutes looking at it
today it came to me clear as a bell.

When I started this project I did a search on Deja News for Status Pro
Basketball and I was surprised to find only a few scattered posts. I know the
game has been out of print for years, but I thought it had a better following
then that. Our local league lasted ten years and only died off because we as
coaches didn't make enough of an effort to play our games. The fact that
Avalon Hill wasn't making cards wasn't much of a problem, we made out own for
that last season. I just didn't keep any of those notes to help me know.
<grin>

But now the deed is done and I can make my own cards again (my son will be
very happy not to have to play with players he doesn't know). If you would
like a copy of my notes, or of the final product, let me know. I had thought
of a WebSite for the game that would include our league rules and other notes
about the game, and I may yet do that, but if we're the only ones interested
it might be just as well for me to email you what you want to see (if
anything).

Figure I'd comment on this. We (friend and myself) have been faithfully
playing the game since 1983 or so. We don't use regular teams, but made up
our own and used the player's cards from different sets as our database to
create it from.

Statistically, since we use the second version (base 8 system with 1-5
for block and steal) it doesn't compare to the NBA, but since we've played
thousands of games, our own trends and wnatnot have come through. It has
become a full fledged hobby playing games, doing stats, history, playoffs,
drafts, coaches, we've even introduced ref's. Yeah, it might sound silly, but
it's basketball escapism at it's best for me. If you want to know more, email
me.
