We recently purchased a basic game of Rummikub (by Pressman) for our niece
(age 7.5) for Christmas because she is ready for this type of game. We had
never played it before this week, but I think everyone (ages 7.5 to 68)
enjoyed learning it.

I have a question about the start of play.

The rules state that you must make an initial play of at least 30 points, and
the 30 points must come from your rack, not those on the table. If you are
the first player, and you cannot make a play of at least 30 points, what do
you do? Do you draw and pass, or do you draw and draw until you can may a
play or plays that total 30 points? If you draw and pass and everyone else
makes initial plays but you still cannot (from your rack), do you just draw
and pass again? I can see some poor schmo (probably me) getting passed up
forever waiting for their initial play.

Please clarify this rule. Thanks.

My second basic question is this: Is it pronounced "Rummy-cub" or
"Rummy-cube"?

Thanks again.

If you can not play, you pick up a piece and your turn ends. Picking up the
piece ends your turn.

As for the name, it is Rummy-cube.

Well first of all, If you are 1st and can't play (happens alot), ya take
a new tile, and it's the next players turn. Each player will either play
their initial 30 points from their rack or pick a new tile and pass. It's
quite possible (and likely) that the play may circle the table a few times
while each player draws as they are unable to play. However, once someone
makes an initial placement, it makes it easier for subsequent plaers to lay
down 30 points as there are now more tiles on the table to work off of. (SO
many times after a few rounds of drawin' tiles, as soon a one player lays
down his 30, the other players wont be far behind.)
Also, for a while I had been under the impression that it was pronounced
"rummy-kub", but I have found this to be wrong, as the correct pronunciation
is "RUMMY- CUBE". (Futher verified by an ad on TV I saw about a month ago.)
(Odd as I had never seen one for it before ever since Pressman relesed it in
like '85 or so.)
And also may I say what a good choice ya made for a growin' mind. A fun
game that builds observation skills, logic, and deductive reasoning, and
hopefuly the ability to reach a conclusion rapidly. (A timer is adviseable
for this one. (Most games with a time limmit on turns I never use a timer
and usually play pretty loosely, but i've fount this one MUCH better when
enforseing the time restriction.))

The rule is that you wait until you can make a virgin meld of 30 points,
unconnected in any way with a prior play (a respondent made a mistake in
this regard).

I find that I like to hoard tiles for quite awhile after the first
player(s) meld. This gives me the initiative over more direct players, and
I have been known to win games on my meld, though this is rare. I love
making 5 or 6 moves on the board to get a tile or two out of my hand,
especially to win the game!

Great game!

I have a question about rummikub and don't know where else to post it. Hopefully you guys can help with this. Can a player pick up tiles every turn without putting anything down? And then when he has arranged all his tiles (which at this point don't fit on the board and are on the table in front of him) he puts them down and wins the game. It's so frustrating!!
