Does anyone know if there is going to be a PC version of Squad Leader
or ASL anytime soon? I thought I read somewhere that Avalon Hill was
going to put out a computer game version but havent heard anything
for about a year now. Any info appreciated!

They are coming out with a program called _Beyond Squad Leader_, but prepare
to be disappointed. Among other things, the game is in _real time_. So it
will basically be a glorified arcade game.

Boy Mark, your really down on Avalon Hill these days! Just because a game
is in real-time doesn't automatically make it bad.

If BSL was exactly like ASL, I would be disappointed. When you change the
medium you have to change the game to fit the new paradigm. Since
computers are radically different than boards/counters, I would expect a
radically different approach and feel to the game. The computer games that
try to act like board games are some of the most boring on the market
(IMO).

BTW, on an earlier thread you mentioned that AH will be out of the board
game completel sometime in the near future. Were you just voicing your
fears, or do you have actual evidence?

As I understand it, the new Beyond Squad Leader is going to be some kind
of amalgam of Up Front, ASL, video game, et. al. type thing. From the
descriptions I've been getting from atomic, it is going to be very
original, unlike anything on the market (either computer or board). Sounds
good to me!

No? Look at "real-time" World War II "simulations," such as _Cross of Iron_
or _Iron Cross_ or whatever it was that New World Computing program was. No
detailed tactical wargame can be "real-time" and still be realistic.

Avalon Hill has already announced that they will be heavily concentrating on
computer games in the future, not board games. Furthermore, almost their
entire wargame staff has left the company. You can draw your own conclusions
from that.

Say it ain't so! As a dedicated wargamer, I'd be heartbroken if the
company that started me into the hobby abandoned board games for the
computer market. I like computer wargames just fine, but they're no
replacement. And the hobby needs the dependable anchor of AH, which has
survived over the decades while other companies have gone bust, or
stopped producing wargames. If anyone from AH is listening, please
reassure me that this isn't the case.

Check out the atomic home page http:/www.atomic.com/ and make up
your own mind about the merits of 'Beyond Squad Leader'. I too was
a bit disappointed that it was not going to be a computerised version
of ASL, but I did enjoy Up Front, and reading the blurb made me quite
enthusiastic about BSL. I gather it will not be true real-time, in
that you can set the game to pause at specific intervals (a bit like
a lot of other computer based strategy games where units follow their
orders until you interrupt them - different paradigm to the 'boardgame
on approach').

If I want hours to ponder each move, I've still got 'Tigers on the
Prowl' :-)

Cheers.
Martin.
