There was a time last year when you could pick up the German version of
the expansion quite reasonably on www.ebay.de - might be worth taking a
look there.
Tim.
Oh, and the key words are "Risiko" and "Erweiterung".
Tim.
As such, I bit the bullet and now own Risk: LOTR and Risk:LOTR Trilogy
edition (withthe extra board, only 4 armies, and WITHOUT the Minas Tirith
game on the back. :(

Two thoughts on this.
Firstly, Hasbro US prepared a special expansion pack that they were
selling to US owners of the original base (non-Trilogy) game. I had
the impression that this wasn't an item stocked in stores, but a
special pack that was being made available direct through Hasbro.
Here's the post from Rob Daviau of Hasbro:

Sorry this took so long to get official. I was waiting for customer
service
to have parts on hand before posting so that people didn't immediately
end up
on back order.
As I wrote a few months back, we have arranged a way for people who
bought
Risk LOTR last year to get RISK LOTR Trilogy Edition without having to
buy
the whole thing again. It's not a perfect solution, but it is there for
people who want it.
Contact the Hasbro customer service number in the rulebook and tell
them you
want the Risk LOTR "Expansion Pack". That should work. If not, tell
them it
is:
New board
New armies
New rulebook
New card deck
You combine these with your old cards, the ring, and your old box and
you are
off and running. Note that the new pieces and board will not fit that
well
into the old tray.
The cost is $18.00 which INCLUDES shipping and handling. I'm guessing
shipping in the US. I'm not sure about Canada or further abroad.
Hope this helps people who bought the game last year.

Secondly, there are allegedly differences between the UK and US
versions of the base game. This means that the European expansion pack
- which was a fully boxed product sold through stores - is not entirely
compatible with the US base game - for example maps that didn't line up
exactly and possibly differences in card sizes/colours.
In summary, US buyers trying to turn their base game into a Trilogy
edition might well be better off going the Hasbro US route as set out
above rather than competing in the UK market which, as noted earlier,
is expensive. I appreciate though that the arrangement described might
have been of limited duration only.
