2013 School Scrabble Championship comment 2: Scrabble as vocabulary builder

NOTE: this comment is in response to an interesting article in Deadspin on the 2013 School Scrabble Championship. The author would not post my comments, so rec.games.boards gets them. The Deadspin article is at:

For the record, here are the words on the eight Table 1 boards that would be flagged by MS Word. I'm not suggesting using something as conservative as MS Word's spell-check as Scrabble's word list, just using something familiar to show how far out in right field Scrabble words are.

monsieurs coagent elopees minster oreides ratines rerisen dacite oories aquae aurei iliad paeon shivs yuans zonae aeon agas brit duit duit enow feme gite gran haji jill liny mell mumu ocra rani scry vext waur wist wive aas aff ain ain bod cep cos deb dom dow eft eme emu fab feh feu fiz gie gox gox hie jee jeu jin kat lev luv mus noh ope pax pec qat qis tho til tor tup udo uta vis zas aa ag ba bo ef ef ef ef er er er es fa fa hm jo ki ki li li li na na na ne ne ne nu od oe oe oe oe oi oi oi oi om qi qi qi qi qi ta ti ut wo xu ya ya yo za za za za za

That's 136 out of 380 words total, or more than a third. Do you think that young students might, just maybe, be better served by a more natural Scrabble word set? Who on earth could understand, never mind write, a story or essay incorporating such words?
