So far the game looks good except for the random setup. I hate this
part of the game. Any suggestions on eliminating random setup while
preserving game balance.

Also the board is less open then the original Stratego as there is no
longer a two row buffer zone. Until a few attacks take place to
eliminate some pieces there's not much space to move around and
maneuver. This seems a big limitation on Flying pieces and also
Slashing pieces.

Jim,

We've tried allowing more switches, but there are some strategies which
excessively benefit from being able to set up pieces in the desired
locations. The one I came across involved a Beserk unit (Silver 7) with the
Shield (Silver 5) and the Bomb (Silver) which each give a bonus. You pump
the piece up to 11 or 12 and watch it eliminate the opponent. Worried about
Magic?? Just use Dumes and the Purple Magic that lets you see where your
opponent has his Magic so you can steer yourself around it...

I'm sure other clever players have found even more devious armies than this.

The pieces which you can destroy to swap in a piece of your choice appeared
to be useless at first, but they are like switches which cost you a low
valued piece. I stick a couple in the army mentioned above to increase the
chances of getting the alignment I need...

Best regards,

Cliff

I agree with you that the random setup is strange. However, when you
consider that Stratego Legends is supposed to be a "collectible" game
(similar to Magic the Gathering) , it tends to make more sense. In MTG,
you choose the cards that make up your deck, but it doesn't mean that
you always get dealt a good hand. If you do a good job tuning your deck,
you will draw a good hand more often. The same thing applies to
Stratego Legends. You have to buy booster packs and use the pieces that
compliment each other to build a better army. Playing with the initial
set that comes with Stratego Legends feels like playing with a 3-color
magic deck that has not been tuned properly (or at all). I' leaning
toward building a one or two color army with more pieces that compliment
each other.

These are the types of things I'm looking to avoid, but I'd think both sides
would have tricks like
this one and things would balance out. The problem is the forst player should
get the advantage.
I'm looking for ways to make the game more strategy oriented and less luck.

Something I'm going to probably try is letting each side set up their board and
then having each player make up
to 4 switches on their opponents board. Then each player gets ONE switch on
their board.

Yeah, it's a good way to move pieces rapidly to a highly desired terrain
location.

Well I don't play Magic. I have played a few CCGs, but don't want to have
to pay huge amounts to play Stratego Legends.
I will probably buy a second set but that's mainly to get more boards and
allow for multiplayer games. I prefere the STRATEGY part of the game and
the random setup really moves away from that side of the game. I want to
allow for player control of the setup, but not destroy play balance.
