I remember seeing, fairly recently, a collection of images of staged
"meeple rampages" across various boardgames. They weren't quite as
funny as I think could be managed with that topic :-) ... but a little
amusing anyway, and I wanted to have another look at them, but now I
can't remember where I saw them. Searches of spielfrieks and r.g.b.
archives hasn't helped. I think that they might have been in the photos
section of a Yahoo group? This ring a bell with anyone?

Yes. I went to Google Groups and asked for "meeples" & "yahoo" in
rec.games.board, and it was the first hit listed. The URL in the
article is <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Unity_Games/files/Photos/Meeples/>.

Ah ho. Entertainingly enough, I managed to whiff this on two axes. I
had sorted a "meeples" googlesearch by date, and didn't bother to read
back that far (2001) because I knew I was looking for some recent post.
(The post you found is not the post I remember reading, but it
certainly has the link I was looking for.) I also had looked at the
Unity Games Yahoo group, among others, but I checked their Photos
section, not the Files section. Argh. Well, thanks!

I think the etymology is an abbreviation of "miniature people".

Hi,

I went to that meeples photo page:
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Unity_Games/files/Photos/Meeples/>

One thing I'm wondering is what game are all those different meeples
from? In the choir pic I recognize the 3 short ones from my Carcassonne
game but there is a tall green one with feet and a tall blue one with no
feet... I have no idea what game they inhabit.

The "male" big meeples look like the ones in StreetSoccer, except
without markings. Dunno. Wherever they came from, there sure are a lot
of them!

Okay, here's the story, from the guy who shot and posted those pics.

The term "meeple" is short for "my people" and was originally coined
by one our Unity Gamers, Alison H.
The reason I made the pics was sort of a joke and sort of a sales
pitch. You see I wanted to get some meeples of the kind you'll find
in Europa: 1945-2035 (or whatever its name is) and after a bit of
digging got in touch with Eurogames' supplier. They sold them in
batchs of 1000s and the more you ordered the cheaper they were. So in
order to get them as cheaply as possible I had to order 12,000 (2000
each in 6 different colors). Well I didn't need 12,000 meeples to
myself, thus the pictures in the UG group ("See all the uses of
meeples! being the theme).
There wasn't a whole lot of thought put into the pics and it was
done on my birthday in about 45 minutes time.

The pics were taken using the 120 meeples you get in Europa, plus
the ones you get with Carcassonne. Note that the meeples in Europa
are of 2 different sexes (skirts and no skirts), thus the 3 different
kinds of meeples you see.

I managed to sell off almost all of the 12000 meeples (I have only a
few hundred left). About a handful of folks actually bought up lots
of 1200 meeples to themselves and occassionally I hear interesting
stories of the uses they were put to, although I would imagine most
are collecting dust somewhere.
