My brother will be visiting Paris in a couple of weeks. Does
anyone have a recommendation for a good board game that he
could pick up for me, and a shop where such things can be
had that is not too out of the way for his other tourist
activities?

I enjoy the popular German games recently imported to the
U.S. like "Settlers of Catan" and various Reiner Knizia
things; semi-wargames like "Full Metal Planete" are also
a possibility. I hear that there is an expansion set
for "FMP"?

Merci in advance, as nobody says.

Hi Mike,

ther is an Epxansion-Set for FMP. A new variable map and two set of
playing pieces. It contains new rules for getting a secound complete
spaceship in round 15. So it is advisible to by two extra sets of
playing pieces to have an total of four. So you can play the extended
rules (wich are really enjoyable) with four players.
The rest of the ludoliere games is very good, too:
Valley of the mammoth, stoneage game
Formula one, racing game
Super gang, gangster game
...
Ludoliere does not exist anymore (This inforamtion is about one year
old, but i have not heard anything else since then) and so you should
take the chance getting game.
I do not know any other french games.

Terrain Vague (sp?) is a good game. Four gangs fight for territory in a
junkyard. It uses a hex map like Settlers, but the hexes are owned by a
particular player and delineate territory. You fight with slingshots,
protect yourself with trashcan lids and convert territory with
wheelbarrows. Everything you do has a cost. The amount of points you
have is fixed except every third turn.

I would like to second the recommendation for "Demarrage", and add that
the Game Cabinet <http://www.gamecabinet.com/> recommends shopping at:

Jeux Descartes

52 Rue Des Ecoles, 75505 Paris

I think the games should still be available in french game shops
I liked them all very much except Footmania.

Well, hard to answer such a question with staying objective!

All other answers are about Ludodelire games, and Ludodelire does not
exist any more. When you are lucky, you can still find my Valley of the
mammooths in some shops. You can also find the new edition of Formula De,
by Eurogames. There is absolutely no chance for finding another Ludodelire
game.

However, Ludodelire was not the only french game publisher. My last game,
Meurtre a l'abbaye, which is more or less in the Ludodelier humoristic
style (I designed it at first for them...) has been published by Multisim.
It's a little expensive, I think, but really funny. It's a kind of
Knightmare Clue.

You can also look for Elixir, a very funny card game, a parody of Magic
with CE-like mechanics. Great fun, but lots of text in french on every
card.
In the Eurogames line, I recommand Zargos (a cross between Risk and Cosmic
Encounter), and Mediterranée (the french name of Serenissima).

No need to go to Paris to find those. Try the Valet d'Coeur in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They're part of Jeux Descartes' network.

I'd recommend La Vallee des Mammouths and Meurtre a l'Abbaye. The
first one may be hard to find as Ludodelire has recently folded.
La Vallee des Mammouths is a multi-player struggle for survival
between tribes of cavemen. You have to face hard winters, rampaging
animals and all the other players raiding you for food and women. I
love that game!
Meurtre a l'Abbaye is by the same designer. If you liked the movie
The Name of the Rose, you'll like the game.

Look for Ludodelire games - as some people mentioned Super Gang,
La Vallee des Mammouthes and Formue De are excellent games.

Also some Eurogames and Jeux Descartes produce nice games
like Vertigo, Droids, Dune (AH-remake), Zargos, Fief, Le
Parreseux, Monogolfiere and several others.

There's also a company called Unicorn, which produces two
nice games called "Guerre & Frontieres", a nice simple combat
game, which is about as difficult as Risk, and "Symbioz", a game
of "ecology", where you grow plants, herbivores and carnivores,
which try to survive eating other players crop. Both games are
quite nice and worth to try IMHO.

You can go to

L'OEUF CUBE
24 rue Linné
75005 PARIS

or

JEUX DESCARTES
52 rue des Ecoles
75005 PARIS

These were the first shops in France to sell Role Playing Games and
wargames (1980 or so). Of course, there is other shops, you can search
other one at http://www.pageszoom.com  -Yellow pages- and you search for
PARLOUR GAMES, PLAYING CARDS AND ACCESSORIES (MANUFACTURE), TOYS AND GAMES
(RETAIL) in Paris. But you are sure to find what you want in the two
above.
